for gaming: 980 ti = titan x

anytime you go beyond 2 cards, you returns on investment will go down - along with compatability as well -

two 980 ti's is the sweet spot

4 980 Tis is actually one of the stupidest things you can do (it has nothing to do with money). It has to do with how SLI works:

SLI for some reason will NOT use all the power out of 4 cards, this is why 2 way SLI is pretty much the max you'd want to do for an optimal expereince. 3 way and ESPECIALLY 4 way SLI brings in a lot of latency issues, and the 3rd and 4th cards aren't even at 50% load at any given time.

Which is pointless since those GPUs are incapable of using all 12GB of vram for gaming (even in 2 way SLI, 3 way SLI maybe if your playing a game at 4k from 2017). The only use for that 12GB I can see is for hardware accelerated encoding.

Plus, if you truly want a good 4k ready gaming machine, then wait for Pascal, it will be more than worth the wait.
