I've had two lightning 770's for almost 3 years now. One of them is nearing the edge of its lifespan. The fan RPM's on that card go from 0-100 constantly every few seconds (very loud) and the display drivers crash in gpu intensive games like the Witcher 3, tomb raider, etc. This has been going on for about a year. Tried everything to get them to work normally, including reinstalling windows, setting factory defaults, switching to LN2 and back. The cards are dust-free as well.
But I've considered upgrading even before these issues. I run most of my games at 1440p and 2gb of vram just doesn't seem like enough. Not to mention SLI has stuttering issues with a good chunk of my games. I have the cards underclocked by about -50 on both the core and memory clock to prevent it from crashing as much. Can't decide if I should keep waiting for pascal or just go ahead and get a 980ti matrix or something similar. I'm assuming the pascal gpus that are better than the 980ti will be $800+ and I'm aiming for the 600's.
Haven't gotten anyone's thoughts on this, so any feedback will be appreciated! thanks :)

I am in the situation with two 680gtx cards, which is about the same as two 770.

Last time I got my 680's 3 month before 7 series started up. I regret it to this day.

Considering the 9 series is the longest running series nvidia has had ever had, and the rate of technological growth hasn't slowed down, I expect major improvements. Upgrading now is the worst possible timing.

To put it into perspective. From launch date 680GTX to launch date 980GTX. That is all of series 6 7 8.

Launch date 980gtx - Pascal
515 days and counting. It will be over 2 years in august. The EARLIEST expected ship date for XX80 series cards. We are currently 200+ days past the average length of time between series they had...

I dont think so. Wouldn't matter though because the one that's messed up I bought used on amazon a couple years back. It worked fine for about a year

Ahh, I see. Well, You can get a stop-gap card if you want to replace it, but NVIDIA's Pascal will be much more powerful. But since you are seeing some issues, you can get a 980 ti, but remember, pascal will come out and there may be something more powerful for the same price.

My buddy just updated his single 770 with a 780ti on EVGA B stock for $180, he was very happy with the difference and didn't have to spend 970/980 money.

Just check it daily (they even have good deals on 980tis/980s/970s) and be ready when you see "add to cart" because the good deals are gone quickly.

We are currently 200+ days past the average length of time between series they had for the last 10 series of cards, going back to the 9800GTX in 2008. In about 8 years we got 10 series of cards.

When Pascal launches, if it is in august it will be over double the historical average. For the amount of time between generations, we should expect major improvements.

The new longer schedule is expected to be the norm, not the exception after pascal launch.

Ok to be more clear. NO ONE should be upgrading now unless your running less than a 680GTX single card, or have no computer. New gaming tech historically launches in the start of 2nd quarter, and the start of 4th quarter Give or take a few days. We are most of the way through 1st quarter right now. Wait at least 15 days into second quarter to decide to upgrade, or 15 days into 4th quarter if you can wait that long.

We have a TON of new tech coming this year.
1. Z170 board refresh with more USB 3.1a and c slots and m.2 slots, and PCIe3.0 lanes. Even at lower price points.
2. Skylake CPU refresh
3. AMD brand new ZEN architecture meant to directly compete with INTEL.
4. Nvidia and AMD hbm2 graphics cards meant to directly compete with each other. Both with VR versions for people who want that.
(the last time they directly competed was over 5 years ago)
5. Wireless AD replacing wireless AC for high end routers by the end of the year. Mainstream in 2017.
6. 1440p 144hz gaming quality monitors really started to launch last year, but this year several more models are launching at better price points, with USB3.1c thunderbolt connections standard. How much better is USB3.1C? Imagine when we went from PS/2 mouse connectors to USB. Yes it is that big of a difference on peripherals over usb 3.0.

Ah, ok. A lot of this I didn't know about. I'll just have to be patient and continue waiting for pascal. My 770's will tough it out. Thanks for your help and all the extra info
