I'm going to build my 1st ever machine. So far, I've got:

*i7-6700k
*MSI GTX980 Ti - Golden

I'm looking at Asus (Hero/Hero Alpha/ExtremeAssembly), ASRock, Gigabyte. I don't want to spend $500-650 if a $2-300 range daddy will do it. But, I don't want to scrimp on $1-200 if I'll regret it later.

I'm going to *try* to OC (might as well have some fun with the new build. Hopefully I don't blow something up!).

I'd like to have onboard wireless (don't know why that's not standard in 2016); good audio would also be appreciated.

[P.S. I'm also posting threads for DRAM and Storage recommendations. You are welcome to join in there as well. I'm trying to buy parts this weekend.]

Thanks for any input!

Growing pains were to be expected at the release, and you see them with any release of brand new new socket, mobo and lines of CPUs. The 1151 was expected to be even more so as this lineup also included the release and use of new DRAM (DDR4) and for many a brand 'new' OS, in Win10... It's one of the big reasons for the continuous BIOS updates that were rolling out.

No, the Hero doesn't have wireless built in, and if wireless is required I myself prefer a USB adapter, having antenna in the back of the case can run into some interference from all the power cables (to PSU, monitors, speakers, etc)

I just got the Strix Ti Fri so haven't gotten into a lot of testing/playing yet, but appears to have OC head room, runs cool, will be...

I've got the Hero and love it, am playing a little more since I finally got my 980Ti yesterday (the Strix OC model) was running a 980 Strix on it (have also run 980s in SLI, 290Xs in XFire, have 48GB DRAM in it at the moment (64GB set comes next) and have run a few other sets (TriZ best so far) , with a 6600K (OCed to 4.6 at the moment while running some test, will take it higher tomorrow. Have had a half dozen CPU coolers I've played with. Great mobo ;)

T-man,
Yes, the Hero was where I started. PCGamer uses this as their Advanced build rec. I just didn't know if there was any reason to spend the extra $$ for the Extreme Assembly. I'm not a hardcore gamer and since I've never OC'd before I don't think I need to spend the extra, but am willing to if it's worth it.

Does the hero have onboard wireless internet and blu-tooth?

I did get a wee nervous about the Asus's when I saw the below thread. Overall though, Asus seems to have a rock solid reputation so I'm not sure how to balance that against this thread:

[P.S. I was going to use the OC Strix also. It's awesome. I just found the MSI Golden for about $50-100 less. And for 2-3 fps less it seems like a good "compromise"--that is, if you can call any 980Ti a compromise !] Do you think the Strix OC is worth the extra hundy?

Blowing up your computer doesn't really happen, Just don't put the voltage to high (I wouldn't go past 1.3v) and you should fine to overclock. Hero boards are usually one of the best boards but hard to recommend given its high price tag.

T-Man,

"Live and Learn" they say :). I got anxious to purchase between reply's and ended up ordering the Z170 Hero Alpha--because I wanted the built in wireless. AND, Most importantly because it has the build in LED/lighting options. I'm doing this build with my 5th grade son and he's super excited to have some fancy lights--so it was worth the extra bones.

...Hopefully I don't end up with the potential interference issues you mentioned!

[I also decided against the MSI 980Ti Golden Edition in favor of the Asus Matrix. It cost me $100 more, but has great reviews with nice performance advantages and seems to run really cool.]
