Hello fine folks at Tom's Hardware,

Looking for recommendations for storage devices in my new build. I mostly care about speed.

So far, I've got:
i7-6700k
MSI GTX 980 Ti Golden (about to purchase)

I'm thinking about using (2) Samung 850 Evo's or Pro's (512gb) in Raid (0). Am I better off going with one or two M.2 drives. Can you even do M.2 drives in Raid? I'm going to probably throw in one WD 1TB black for general storage. But really I just want fast boot and fast load times. I'm on a computer 10 hours a day and am sick of a slow computer. Yes, gaming maaaaay happen too!

ANY THOUGHTS APPRECIATED.

Solution
Don't bother with the RAID 0. It won't make a difference except in benchmarks, very large sequential transfers and a few specific programs.

What you should do is get a NVMe (m.2 or PCIe) based SSD The extra IOPS from that would be much more worthwhile on a day to day basis. I'd also then take that extra money saved from only getting one SSD and get a couple more blacks (or reds) and make a RAID 10 (5 if you know the pros/cons still need backups either way) array so your secondary storage can have pretty decent performance as well

the idea of using SSD's for the game drive dosent actually make much of a noticeable difference, it just ends up costing you more money. so i would recommend you find a reliable drive a Terabyte or more as games today are much larger than they used to be. going back to my first point about the noticeable difference - the boot times of your system will be a lot faster so i suggest getting an SSD for your boot drive and then just getting the biggest hard drive available to store your games on. good luck with the building :)

Nice tip. Since i have no idea what pci ssd is, could you please give me a specific idea or two. (and what's the price range?) I don't mind spending an extra hundy or so, if it's worth it, but I still have a family to feed :)

Thanks for info. Can you please give me a specific recommendation or two on the NVMe. I have no idea what that is :)

One 950 pro will do. I am too afraid or data loss to ever use raid. I would still get 2 TB HDD. You may need if you play tons of games like me.

This is a M.2 one (actually uses PCIe 3.0 x4)

This is a PCIe one (in a PCIe slot)

I personally would go with the M.2 one. It doesn't take up an expansion slot or really any space but has the similar performance. Just make sure your mobo has NVMe/PCIe support on the M.2 most Z170 boards should.

Spectre...
DID I BUY THE RIGHT ONE?

[Before you replied, I saw this "best of" page from Maximum PC magazine and they highlighted the 950 Pro also. I ordered it before I saw your reply here.]

Here's link to the one I bought on Amazon. Is it the same as the one you are talking about?

The overviews look a bit different, but I think they have the same model #...

Also...what about cooling?

I found a fair amount of reviews that say these run hot. If I use an AIO cooler for the CPU, can I run a branch over to the M.2. Or, or do I just hope the front fan keeps it cool enough?

Yep that is it right there you picked well.

For cooling though they do run a little hot but it is only really an issue under constant heavy random IO, database usage and the like you won't run into it during desktop usage. Though if you're really worried just a small fan blowing on it will be more that enough

Thanks for input. I'm going with the 950 pro for OS. Then decided on a 1TB 850 Evo for storage. I don't need that much storage, and will probably only play 3 or 4 games over next year. Then I can drop in another TB of SSD or HDD as prices fall in a year.
