Hey guys, I've been recently debating whether an i3 4160 is good enough for gaming, or whether an i5 really is compulsory, even though investing even in the cheapest i5 4460 would go much beyond my budget. My current rig I'm planning to buy would be:

Intel i3 4160
8GB Ram (Corsair Vengeance)
Gigabyte GTX 950 OC
Corsair VS550 550W PSU

Would this be enough to run most games at 40-60 FPS? How much of a difference would replacing the i3 with an i5 4460 make?
Also, I was looking into an fx-6300 - I'm under the assumption an i3 would be better than that, as I am not planning to OC (can't afford OC mobo + coolers).
And just to ease my niggles, an i3 would perform identically to an i5 in terms of simple day to day use (web browsing, running minecraft, simple game development), right?

Any help would be appreciated.

hey meta,

most older games don't utilise more than 2,4 cores like csgo ,league minecraft.
so in those games and even in gta 5 u get more fps with an i3 than an fx 6300.
And i5 will give u certainly more fps and its better for multitasking.
but the i3 can seriously pack a punch don't underestimate it.

for the most part it comes down on the graphics card. consider a msi gtx 950 2gb, and if thats not possible a gtx 750 ti.
also i recommend u a better power supply like these 2 for instance http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=PSS12II520&c=CJ http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=XFX-450SGR

I also think that i3 4160 is also enough for your build, but if you really want to get more with 15 fps, you can also buy an i5.
but honestly this i3 also can run pretty serious games, but if you really want more fps and performance you can buy this i5. But this i3 isn't a bad idea.
So you'll should to pay more money for a little more performance for this i5.
My conclusion is that i recommend them both, but if your budget isn't low, you can buy this i5

I would wager that he found his solution in the three years ago. To that end, I am closing this thread.
