I have zero experience with Ubunto and trying to help a friend. They can not get on line and I have no clue what to look for or how to look for anything. If it was windows it would be a breeze for me lol It just says server not found. They have a Dell E1405. I have no clue how to tell you what their wireless card is either without taking it apart. Perhaps someone can give me step by step instructions

Solution
Hi

Look for a label on underside for wireless spec
Or go to Dell web site look for support section enter serial number and get original as built specification

Finally there is a service manual available which will show you how to remove the cover and look at wireless card label

If wireless chipset was supported out of box a modern linux would load driver automatically

You may need to use a network cable to connect to internet router
Assuming that device has its device driver loaded

Its a pitty you did not get a detailed list of devices in windows before going to linux
Speccy From piriform springs to mind

If all else fails get a usb wireless n dongle which is supported by the linux you are using
