Hello,

I need a home media server on which to store and play 24 bit/96 KHz digitized copies of my large vinyl record collection, my music Super Audio CDs (SACDs), High Definition CDs (HDCDs), regular ("red book") music CDs, copies of my Blu-ray movies, DVD movies, 4K videos, and (eventually when they become available) 4K movies.

Ideally, I would like hardware decoding/encoding and upgradeability.

Robustness to motion and the environment would be a big plus as I plan on using this media server on board my sailing vessel.

I would prefer purchasing a turn key media server with the necessary software installed, but am willing to entertain home build options as well.

My budget for this project would be $4K, or thereabouts.

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions/guidance.

You don't really need major hardware to do what you are describing. You really just need a nas with enough and expandable storage. Your network will dictate how well you are able to stream your media. Try one like this and you should be just fine, http://www.amazon.com/Synology-Station-Network-Attached-DS1815/dp/B00P3RPMEO/ref=sr_1_7?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1455491798&sr=1-7&keywords=nas&refinements=p_89%3ASynology. If you need more space just add the expansion and more drives. If you look at the specs you will have more than enough space and speed.

The 'needs' needs to be reindexed.

#1 consideration - "media server on board my sailing vessel"
#2 consideration - large drive space

Any trivial PC or laptop can access multi TB of space. Movies, music, etc.
Plex, windows, whatever as the user interface.

A good i5 or i7 laptop (space considerations onboard), with a NAS box holding whatever drive sizes you require.
