I have tried all ports and other computers.. It does the same thing on all of them if it shows up at all... I am at a loss..

1. You've indicated that the USB external HDD is listed in the "Disk drives" section of Device Manager. (At least I presume you're referring to DM, right?)

2. So the USBEHD is not shown in Disk Management?

3. Has that USBEHD worked OK in the past or is this the first time you're using it?

4. Is the USBEHD a commercial unit or is it a HDD which you installed in a USB enclosure?

5. Are you able to remove the HDD from its enclosure and install the disk internally in your system?

Hi there April_9,

It would be really useful if you could provide some more information. Just check what ArtPog have asked.
Apart from that, you can try the Ubuntu Live CD approach. Just boot up from a CD or a flash drive and see if the drive would be accessible: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode
Have you tried using a different USB cable? It may be a good idea to try that out.

LEt us know how this goes,
