I recently upgraded from phenom II to i7-4790k so I had to switch motherboards. I hear that usually, when you switch out motherboards, you have to reinstall windows, so I did (on a new hard drive).
However it turned out to be a total mess, lots of unexplained, seemingly unrelated errors, so I gave up on that and threw in my old hard drive with my old windows 7 install.
on first boot, I put in the mobo drivers disc that came with the new board, and installed the ethernet driver, then after that, windows automatically installed a bunch of drivers for all my new stuff.
It seems to be working completely fine, apart from having to re-activate windows, with my multi-use key that has been used up.
My dilemma is this. I can purchase a windows 7 key from a reputable vendor, but I do not want to waste the key on this install if it's just a ticking time bomb that is going to completely fail in a few days.
Is this a viable method of doing this? Or should I really try to make a fresh install work on the other hard drive?
specs:
ASRock z97 extreme4
Intel i7-4970k
AMD radeon hd 6970
corsair vengeance 1x 8b ddr 1600mhz
1tb WD blue 7200rpm (new)
500gb caviar blue 5400rpm (old/current)
OCZ 700w psu
