Hello,

Im building a new PC for university, here is the specs:

CPU
i7 6700k
MOTHERBOARD
Asus maximus viii hero alpha z170
CPU COOLER
Corsair H100i GTX liquid cooler
MEMORY
G.skill trident Z series 16GB 2x8GB DDR4 2800Mhz
STORAGE
Samsung 850 EVO 250GB ssd
WD 3TB Blue edition
GPU
Asus STRIX GTX 980Ti 6gb
POWER
EVGA Supernova 750 G2
CASE
NZXT H440 white case

I mainly use it for rendering 3d architecture models, 3dsmax , cad, photoshop, etc only minor gaming! Was juggling between the sabertooth z170 Mark 1 due to its durability but not sure?

is this a good choice? thanks for reviewing!

Durability should be zero difference. CPUs almost never fail unless abused.

For well threaded workloads, probably ~20-25% faster. The cores on the 5820k are lower clocked and slightly older in design, so you're not seeing 50% more cores > 50% more speed. Double the RAM channels means anything memory-bound will go stupid fast, and you can fit more memory. I'd look at 32GiB minimum for what you're doing, and that would prevent any further upgrades on a Z170 platform, at least until 16GiB DIMMs are affordable.

Single threaded workloads will be a little slower, but there's relatively few of those around.

The 5820k will chew through more power, but I believe the bigger die, better thermal material, and bigger package makes it easier to...

There's no point in going for a ROG or sabretooth board other than bling. The longevity difference is marketing and nothing more.

The 6700k is currently priced fairly highly; you might be able to get a 5820k with two extra cores for about the same price.

Closed loop water cooling tends to be expensive and noisy compared to a similarly performing air cooler.

Thanks for replying, you reckon the 5820k will do better in terms of rendering for me? match it with a X99 motherboard, will this combination be better than 6700k + z170? in long term as well?

the gpu has 3 fans, my case has 2 fans, too much for air cooler?

while we're at it, if I decide to go along with the x99 and hexa core, will it be worth waiting for the 6800? due Q1/Q2 this year? or would the performance be relatively the same as the 5820k

Someone told me with that much fans my pc would be very loud

So I looked into the 5820k build,

x99 Sabertooth and 5820k! some questions
how much of a difference is the 6700k and 6520k quad core vs hex core, 20%? 30% better?
is 5820k efficient? (heat, durablilty etc) since it was debuted in 2014? vs the newer 6700k? Just throw all the pros and cons:)

oh and what does it mean when I hear from someone 4 fast cores will beat 6 slow cores? what will this mean for me and my requirements?

Its a $130 dollar difference for me to go with the x99 and 5820k, worth? I wouldn't mind paying!

I still wouldn't go for a Sabretooth. You can save $70-100 by going for a cheaper board that'll still be great quality.
