Hello peeps, i'm trying to put together a new gaming pc that would last me a few years and i want to hear some opinions on the rig. Specs:
MSI Z170A Gaming M3
Intel Core™ i7 6700K
Kingston PC4-19200 "HyperX Savage" KIT 16384 MB
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 "Windforce 3X" OC

i'm planning to play on 1080p. If you've got any ideas for improvement replies are welcome, but the price range should be around what is now ^

At 490 and 410 euro, the price / performance ratio shrinks but still a significant advantage for the 970.

970 - 3.10
980 - 2.79

The 980 is about 11.5% faster than the 970
Your 980 costs 19.5% more than the 970

Of course price / performance ratio is always lower the closer you get to "No. 1", so in the end it's not always the numbers but what makes the user happy.

At 1080p especially, it's hard to make a case for the 980 since the Ti came out. Here's the relative 'bang for the buck" based upon techpowerups test results. (fps / dollar)

970 - 3.97
970 SLI - 3.48
980 - 2.97
980 SLI - 2.60
980 Ti - 2.53
980 Ti SLI - 2.21

Notice the big drop from the 970 to 980 (1.00) ... then the relatively small drop from the 980 to Ti (0.44)

If considering both AMD and nVidia, be sure to account for the difference in overclocking headroom. In short, the best performing card may well depend upon whether you overclock or keep stock settings.

The R9 cards are very aggressively clocked "in the box" so at 1080p for example, they'd go 980 Ti > 980 > 390X > 970> 390 ... when overclocked they would be ranked 980 Ti > 980 > 970 > 390X > 390. This also hold true at 1440p

yah i was originaly planning a 970 but the difference in price between them is 80€ in my country so its not that much. Is the difference in performance so small that it isn't worth the extra 80€?

well if its only 80€ more just go ahead and get it the increase will be worth it at that margin
in the US the price of the 970 is 50% less than the 980

yah at least for the two i was comparing (Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 "Gaming G1" and Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 "Windforce 3X" OC) 970 being 410€ and 980 being 490€.
Anyway thank you for the fast reply.

thanks for the comparison but in my case like i said the difference between 970 and 980 is 80€ and the difference between 980 and 980 ti is further 270€, so 980 seems the best choice to me ^^

Will probably go with 980 for the bit of extra power, but thank you very much for the answer.

Who remembers the guy who finished 2nd in a race ? Nobody ... well maybe his mom.

Its the same w/ CPUs, GPUs ... or even NASCAR ... :). Finishing 1st instead of 2nd is usually worth a decent amount of change to those involved.

All kidding aside tho .... it's whether it meets you needs. Sometimes the bump tot he next level will get you over a targeted threshold. Let's say for example, you want to get over 60 fps ... then if one card dos that and another doesn't, then the bump makes meeting that threshold possible .... if it brings you from 40 - 48 ... maybe you're less excited about it.

Wither 3 is a perfect example. Here the reference 980 hits 59 fps, so it will be a sure thing that the Gigabyte will pass that.... prolly do close to 68 fps right out of the box. The 970, will pass 60 also but might not outta the box, to get 61-62 you'd have to OC and folks oftentimes don't wanna mess with that.

If curious, you can always compare how each does in about 19 games here:
