Hello folks, thinking about going from a 2-way SLI with MSI GTX 980 Ti to a 3-way. Let's say that money is not an issue. What would be the best CPU and mobo for this purpose? This is only for gaming, but I'm pretty serious about squeezing every last frame out of my system at 4K. Any views on cooling solutions also welcome. Thanks!

Solution
For 3way sli I would suggest getting the X99 chipset along with an i7-5930k or an i7-5960x (with the latter being better ofcourse) due to their 40 pci-e lanes, which will come in handy when going 3way sli. Other cpus have only 16 lanes which would force you to run in something along the lines of x8/x4/x4 which is not really optimal. The other option would be the cheaper i7-5920k which has 28 lanes which is enough for x16/x8/x4

That's about what I had figured. Any thoughts on the mb? Some people seem to like the Asus X99 Deluxe.

Yes, a good 4K frame rate even at max settings is my particular goal. Well, that and the sheer badassitude of it, tbh :)

Thanks for your thoughts, mate. I'd never skimp on the PSU. Thinking EVGA T2 1600W.

Yeap, that will be more than plenty. that PSU is made for 4way, you can go slightly lower, those high end PSUs can hold their ground quite impressively. The EVGA SuperNOVA 1200 P2 is more than you need, a quality 1000W psu can handle 3 980tis and this is more than quality, so unless you plan on going for 4way in the future (which is unlikely) I would say going for the 1200 p2.

Yeah, I think I can live with a measly 64 GB :) Man, I can still remember when 4 GB was considered insane...

Thanks!
