Fan stuck on 100% speed when OC'ing beyond 3.8Ghz, despite low temperature

I'm using a G3258 and I've previously had it modestly overclocked to 3.8Ghz, which is nice and stable and gives a temperature of around 30c idle and 55c max when gaming, with the fan at a moderate speed.

But whenever I try to bring the CPU any higher the fan goes to 100% speed and never comes down, despite the temperature being only a few degrees higher (about 35c idle, 65c max when gaming). This is in direct contradiction of the fan's speed/temp tuning, which at those temperatures should be no higher than 60-70% speed.

It does this with both the stock cooler and my new one. And of couse if I lower it back down to 3.8 the fan returns to normal speed.

I could try different software to control the fan speed, but I'd rather not resort to that and I don't think the fan would even obey... I'd much rather figure out why it's going nuts for no apparent reason, and ignoring the fan controls I've set for it.

Anyone have any ideas?

I'd guess that it is only the fan running at 100% speed that is keeping temperatures stable "only a few degrees higher". Any lower and you get thermal runaway. You either need to settle for a lower overclock or else purchase a really efficient heatsink.

Well people regularly overclock this processor much higher on the stock cooler, so I can't imagine that being the problem.
