Hi guys,

a few months ago I have followed some instructions (probably these) to move the temporary files in Windows folder from C to another harddrive to get 16GB of more space. However since then many programs and files are missing the icons and now I'm having problems with installing and uninstalling some programs so I'd like to move it back. Could anyone tell me how to do it?

Thanks!

If you go through what you did to move things and just reverse the procedure it may work. Doing a repair setup of Windows may also fix things.
Moving the Temp folder is different than moving Windows Installer or other folders. Need to know exactly what you did and how. Did you try running Windows Restore to go to a point before you did this?

That procedure on how to move those folders are very bad to follow and there is 0 need to do that. It's a lot easier to just locate your personal files to the other drive by simply changing the location of My Documents, Videos, Pictures. All you need to do is right-click on those folders, go to options, location and type in the other HD drive letter and path you want to use. No messing with system files. While playing around with those things may be neat to try, I would never do that to anyone's computer that was running out of space.

To fix things, you need to reverse what you did, run a Repair setup of Windows, or use a system restore point. Repair setup may not fix it fully as it may be missing files that you moved to the other drive, it won't be able to restore those if they were not part of the Windows setup.

Hi! Thanks for oyur answer. Well since it was a few months back, I can't say for 100% sure what all I did, and I know this is my problem.. but I remember that I simply copied the ...windows/installer folder from C to drive F and then I used the command prompt to tell windows the new path to these folders which are now F:\C_DRIVE\windows\installer

If I use the Windows restore to try to go back to the point before it (and I don't remember when I did it exactly), will it affect all other changes I made in windows? I mean can I loose some data or work by doing this?

I will try to use the Repair setup later today

Thanks!

I don't know exactly how far the restore will go with rolling things back, with the time it takes to run though, I don't think it will affect any files outside of Windows system files. But I'd do a backup of your files anyway before trying it.

So I tried but the restore function only lets me restore things abour a month back, no further so that is not an option unfortunately. Is there really no way in which I could just copy the folder back to the C drive and tell the system that the files are back on the C drive? (Reverse of what I did)

I'm sorry for not answering quickly but I've been very busy lately. Nonetheless I'm am truly thankful for your help!
