Hey guys, I'm going to build a secondary low budget PC, mostly for gaming, and can't decide what to buy. AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition or Intel Pentium G3258? I've heard great things about both processors overclocked, so I'm planning to do it. I'll be playing games like LoL, BF4, MKX, CoD's, GTA V if that helps. Thanks in advance.

Solution
You will need a descent motherboard and cooling to overclock the Phenom safely, which jacks up the price. <FFS Gam3r01 your motherboard is terrible for that OC...>

The Pentium is practically obsolete for modern games already since it only has two logical cores.

Just get a Skylake i3 and a cheap board and be done with it. It's faster, has four logical cores, and doesn't even need to be overclocked...although it can if you are savvy enough.
I honestly would take the 965 (and not just because I own one). It still performs very well for its age, even better than the 860k in most cases, which is the main competition for the G3258.
If you can get it for cheap, I would get the 965 and OC it as high as possible.

However, if you ever plan to upgrade the pentium would have a much better upgrade path.

I know it is, I built the thing years ago before I knew what OCing was, and I was on a tight budget.
How the hell its running that OC stable for the past 2 years is beyond me, but if it fries its an excuse to upgrade.

Skylake i3s are the best option, I agree.

When I first seriously started to play around with overclocking, I was also pushing a Phenom II quad to 4.2GHz on a 4 phase 780G AM2+ board. The thing made so much electrical noise under load it made me wonder when it would finally explode. The crappy PSU did explode ><

In case I get the phenom, will this motherboard let me oc it: MSI 790GX-G5 ?
Also I have a CPU cooler messing around over there. It's a Xigmatek HDT-S1283. If these two are going to give me troubles I'll go for the i3...

Its actually 1.525 (1.56V in CPU-Z, I trust the BIOS more).
I was looking to do so, but for some reason if I touch any settings in the BIOS it auto resets my voltage below 1.5V, so I cant get past 4GHz if I try a new OC. So its just sat this way since, hasnt melted down yet and I cant go higher so I gave up.
