Why does my laptop keep disconnecting from my home Wi-Fi?

Hi everyone. I have a quite frustrating issue with my laptop, a HP Envy notebook (15-ae178ca) running under Windows 10. Since about a month, I can’t get a stable connection on my home Wi-Fi with it. It always keeps randomly disconnecting while all my others devices like my phone, TV, etc. don’t have this problem at all. My only solution is to use an Ethernet cable, which is in my basement. If it was only that, I would think of a Wi-Fi card issue. But on every other Wi-Fi I use, it doesn’t have any problem. If it’s not a Wi-Fi card or a router problem, do you guys have any idea how I can resolve that issue?

Wifi is relatively sensitive to environmental surroundings. Can you think of anything that may have changed in your home environment?

Furniture moves, construction, new appliances....anything?

Could also be that the laptop's wireless card has degraded just enough to "fail" at home verus other environments.

Hardware does degrade, fail, etc. Although it may be inconvenient, see if moving closer to the wireless router helps.

Any new wireless devices? Interference from baby monitors, alarm systems. New neighbors, nearby construction?

Just need some pattern or repeatable events to pin down the problem.

Thanks for your answer at first! Keeping in thoughts your advices, I can’t find any thing that could modify the stability of my Wi-Fi. I have a Mac right next to my notebook and it works perfectly fine while the HP keeps disconnecting. I even tried to sit a foot away of my router and it didn’t change anything… I have this notebook since last September but the Wi-Fi just started to act weirdly three weeks ago, without any notices. At first, I thought it was because of an outdated driver but even after installing everything on Windows update, it keeps disconnecting for no reason…

You still have some options:

One thing that can help is to open the Event Viewer and look at the logs. Look for errors and warnings that occur just before or at the time of the disconnect. Any error codes or "explanations" could help identify and fix the problem.

The Event Viewer can be intimidating: lots of information is there. But all you really need to do is explore around, look at the different menus and tabs. Much like working with file explorer.

When you find an error message or something else that does not fit it with the rest of log entries you can right click that entry for more information.

No need to rush about and understand it all. Get familarized and you will quickly become comfortable with the setup and information provided.

Make take two or three "sessions" but that is okay. Just do not immediately react to any thing that appears relevant. Look some more, even google some.

Will help you learn a lot more about your computer as well.

Please post if you see something that does relate or correspond to the disconnects. A few more clues are needed.

For absolutely no reason, everything seems to work now. I guess you were right when you said wifi is really sensitive. Thanks for your help!
