Hi, my current PC is very old and not worth upgrading, so instead I am looking at buying a new PC and I want to know if I could use my old graphics card, and hard drives on my new PC- to save money on it.

So instead of going straight out to a new graphics card, I can use my old one until I can afford a better one.

Current Stuff:
■ My current GPU: ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB Video Card
My current OS drive: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
My current hard drive: Samsung Spinpoint F1 DT 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Can I put them into this build:
CPU: Intel Core i5-4690k Devil's Canyon 3.5GHz 6MB Retail Box
MB: Asus B85M-E LGA 1150 mATX Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill 8GB Kit (2x4GB) DDR3 Ripjaws X C9 1600MHz
OS Drive: (none- want to use old)
Storage Drive: (none- want to use old)
GPU: (none- want to use old)
PSU: FSP Aurum S 650W 80PLUS Gold
Wireless: TP-LINK WN881ND 300Mbps Wireless N PCIe Adapter

The GPU I will be getting later will be: MSI GeForce GTX970 Gaming 4GB PEAK GDDR5 2x DVI HDMI

Solution
Yeah you definitely can use them, there is no problem. The PSU is large enough to handle the gtx 970 in the future as well. Just look into a differnet motherboard or a different CPU, this CPU is made for overclocking so either get a z97 board so you can overclock it or drop down to the i5-4590, no point in spending extra cash on feature you will not use.

Is it worth spending an extra $105 just to overclock? or should I just downgrade to a non-overclockable CPU, does overclocking effect gaming performance THAT much?

Actually it doesn't affect it pretty much at all, also you will need a dedicated cooler which is like $30 at least. Personally I would drop down to a 4590 and call it a day. Your GPU will become slow way before the CPU becomes slow (and that is not in the next 3-4 years). Also consider dropping down to a 550W psu, since you will be going with the gtx 970. somethign like the evga supernova g2 550w is a great choice.

Overclocking graphics card does not need special hardware, but software and just a strong PSU and good case airflow. Overclocking CPU needs special CPU with K and a special motherboard with Z in the name. Then you can overclock it from BIOS/UEFI menu. Needless to say that you need after market cooler, a good airflow and strong PSU.

Depending on the game and how you do it, overclocking both parts CAN (can, not must) have an impact, like 20-25 fps. Especially the graphics card have a bigger impact on most games than CPU. But doing it to the extreme will definitely decrease lifetime of your hardware and there is a risk that something bad can happen. I don't recommending doing it. Doing it slightly is ok, but I don't recommending it to the extremes, if you don't want change your hardware for a long time.

@1080P:

ULTRA w/ hairworks on: 30~40FPS
ULTRA w/hairworks off: 53~55FPS
HIGH w/ hairworks on: 50~53FPS
HIGH w/ hairworks off: 60+ FPS (reaching up to 78 if im not wrong)

I cannot recall the last time we tested a video game that showed absolutely no performance difference between the Core i7 clocked at 2.5GHz and 4.5GHz.

CPU Project Cars
4.5 Ghz: 72 fps
3.0 Ghz: 66 fps

Overclocking the Core i7-4770K didn’t help squeezing more performance out of the GeForce GTX Titan X, while reducing the clock speed to just 2.5GHz didn’t impact performance greatly either.

EDIT:
Forgot to say, I play with GTX 970 without overclocking it and a non overclockable Xeon 1230v3 at 3.3 Ghz with hyper threading (its like a i7 without overclocking feature and no integrated graphics unit). I absolutely have no needs to overclock and decrease lifetime of my system. I can play everything at high or highest settings at 1080p with at least 60 fps. If I would set to console like settings, it would be often just normal settings below high. My predict for future: I think you can play everything 5 years from now guaranteed with at least 30 fps on a 1080p resolution. You just have to lower quality settings.

If I'm getting a non K processor, do I really need a Z170?

You can only OC on Z170
