Intel i5 2500 (non-k) or i3 6100 for gaming?

Hey guys!

I am planning to buy a budget gaming rig, and i encountered a used Intel i5 2500 (non-k) in a pretty good condition. It's price is the same as a new i3 6100 (what was my original goal). However, if i go with the i5, i also could save up on the mobo, since i could get a 1155 socket mobo much cheaper than a 1151 one.

So what do you think, what would be the better choice? The older Sandy Bridge i5, what is, well yeah old, but still pretty good (i think) or the new Skylake i3?

Mostly i play CSGO, and sometimes i would like to play some AAA title. The VGA card will be a GTX 950 (or a better used card if i find a good deal in time)
The obviously better upgrade path for the 1151 doesnt really bother me, since i wont ever get an i7 (too pricey and i dont even need it), and afaik theres not much improvement between the Intel generations atm, so maybe im still good to go with a Sandy Bridge i5?

Based purely on that site, I'd say go for the i3-6100. I know the comparison is for a i5-2500k but since it's not overclocked in the comparison, it shouldn't matter. Financially what makes more sense for you, I'm not sure. I would plan both builds in a PCPartpicker saved parts list, so that you can compare the costs of each option.

The site states that the i3-6100 has a 40% overall performance improvement over the i5-2500k. Plus it has a lower TDP.

Sorry for necro'ing this thread, but the answer selected is not a good one.

If you look properly at the link on cpu-world.com, both processors are shown with around the same performance (the first two graphs). The i3's higher single core performance (faster clockspeed...) gets balanced by the i5's higher multicore performance.

The only difference is integrated graphics performance, which doesn't matter for a gaming rig, as it would have a dedicated graphics card.

So no, the i3 6100 is not at all "40% faster".

So please, put a bit more consideration into your reply, rcald2000...

A better solution to hittheroadjack's problem would be, "the cheaper option, with a slight preference for the true 4-core processor for futureproofing". Granted, the Skylake platform is more modern (DDR4 memory support), but for a comparison i3 vs i5, the i5 wins any day for current and future games that are becoming better optimised for true 4-cores.

Modern 4-cores deliver enough gaming performance (with one or two exceptions where an i7 is required). Put the extra money into a faster graphics card, as most games are not cpu-limited, but gpu-limited.
