I've been looking around on Ebay for some old desktops to use for game servers or to rent off some Virtual Machines from them, when I saw: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xserver.TRS0&_nkw=server&_sacat=0

It looked way too good to be true. Like, $144 for 2 quad core xeon cpus, 32GB of ecc ram, ect. and I was wondering what was wrong with them.

I mean, if these things are so cheap, why don't people just buy these and attach a graphics card to them and play games, host servers, or render stuff.

Does anyone think that I should get this:

To run a few virtual machines with windows or Linux for my personal use?

Solution
Go for it. It's a better spec than what I use for a dedicated server.
many companies have a policy to replace hardware every x years and they sell their old stuff cheap.

I've bought many second hand Dell machines and have not regretted any purchase.
There is of course a small chance you may get faulty or failing parts, but that's up to you to and your risk profile.

I could probably use some sound dampening or something if it's too loud

I heard it's cheap because servers are meant to last 7-8 years, and desktops are meant to last 1-2, but desktops can last way beyond that, so why can't servers last a few more years?

Drives aren't an issue, I use Linux, and it being old isn't an issue to me
