Extremely slow transfer speed between drives

Hello, all. I've been working on finding some answers here via searching and came up dry, so here's the post.

I've been trying to transfer my games (162GB) to a seperate hard disk, but the transfer rate is horribly slow. Like, 141KB/second slow. This is between a 640GB WD Blue and a 2TB WD Black.

I know the drives are okay, even though the Blue is a lot slower- at its outer limit, its readrate was only 5MB/second or so- considering it's probably a decade old at this point, it's acceptable.

However the Black is almost two orders of magnitude faster- its MINIMUM was about 80MB/second in randomized read tests. I can't figure it out.

Does anybody have any answers?

"I don't know how that would help" Which one?
Yeah, there is something wrong with either one of the drives or the connections. As your WD Blue is an old drive, it is possible that it is failing.
What testing tools have you used? It would be useful if you can provide screenshots of the SMART report(both drives).

In case there is something wrong with any of the two drives, you need to back up the data stored on it ASAP.

Basically my suggestions were:
- See if this is not caused by connection issue. Use different cables(if you have spare ones) and ports.
- See if you can transfer a single big file at a decent speed. There would be difference in speed if you transfer many small files and one single big one.
- If your WD Blue is...
Hi there _Saber,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your HDDs.
Unfortunately, transfer rate so slow, could indicate a failing drive.(bad sectors) :(

Have you tried transferring a single file? It may be a good idea to start with backing up your most important data as well.
I believe that it will also not hurt to attach the drive with different cables(both SATA and power ones) to a different SATA port.
In case the issue persists, you can boot up Ubuntu from a flash drive or a CD -> access your WD Blue -> try to transfer the data to your WD Black. Sometimes, Ubuntu handles better failing drives: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode

It would be a good idea to test the drive as well. Yet, you should back up the data first.(or as much as you can) You can use WD's DLG tool(both short and extended tests): http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=gkQz2F

Actually, you can test both your drives.

Let me know how this goes,
D_Know_WD :)

I don't know how that would help... Maybe the WD Blue is failing, and that's what you're hinting at? the Black is as fast as it should be in the tests, and it's basically new out of the box. The Blue passed SMART though- thank God, it's my OS drive and has all my personal data. I'll check everything over in the morning.

- If your WD Blue is failing, and the speed is too slow and you can't back up your data. You can try the Ubuntu Live CD approach out.

Keep in mind that you shouldn't keep your personal data stored on a single drive as mechanical drives could just fail, even without warning.

Cheers,
