Hey guys the MSI GTX 970 4GB Gaming power supply requirements is 500 watts according to newegg. I was wondering if you have two GTX 970's (SLI), would you need a minimum 1,000 watt power supply? I have an FX 8350 cpu. My current psu is an EVGA SuperNOVA G1 650 Watt 80Plus Gold certified.

Solution
650W G1 is plenty of power.

Measured power consumption GTX 970 2-way SLI

System in IDLE = 123 Watts
System Wattage with GPU in FULL Stress = 439 Watts
Difference (GPU load) = 316 Watts
Add average IDLE wattage ~10 Watts
Subjective obtained GPU power consumption = ~ 326 Watts

I have two factory overclocked 970s in SLI (EVGA SSC Gaming ACX 2.0+) and run a 750W PSU. You may get away with it at 650W depending on how many other components and fans you have, if you overclock the CPU, etc.

Also, I noticed that G1 650W PSU has four split +12V rails at 20A each, so not sure what impact on SLI that would have compared to say a single +12V rail with 52A for example that my 750W has. Maybe SR-71 can answer that.

Here is Guru3D's power supply recommendation:

GeForce GTX 970 or 980 - On your average system the card requires you to have a 500 Watt power supply unit.

GeForce GTX 970 or 980 in 2-way SLI - On your average system the cards require you to have an 800 Watt power supply unit as minimum.

If you are going to overclock your GPU or processor, then we do recommend you purchase something with some more stamina.

^ a toms article had them at 180 peak draw. I've seen benches with ocd going above 200. So 400w worst case if he oc's. Thats 80% of 500...hence my suggestion. At 340e stock is 70 ish percent so sweet spot.

They arent 150w cards in the real world, but I was allowing overheads.

Anyway, 750 has been arrived at by others so I wasn't far off.

190w peak

I have two of them running on a 620w PSU and the power meter that I have plugged into the wall socket disagrees with your numbers.

I saw that they are 150w cards but how can they have only 30w difference with 960? :heink:

Ask Nvidia. I also have two 960's and they do only draw about 119w.

You were the one who posted those numbers and I don't see anything in that post that states you are just parroting someone else's numbers.

Your post that I quoted had no links to support your "guess".

As I said, I agreed they were my numbers (750) The 190w was the one from a benchmark and the ones I thought you were stating I had come.up with.

Seriously, I'm actually not disagreeing here. I was just trying to help the guy out. What's up with people on the internet nowadays?
