Need GPU to beat 960

Hey there, my buddy just bought a new rig with his tax return and I'm trying to stay a step ahead if you will just because competition is fun. I'm currently sporting a G3258 OC'd to 4.6 Ghz with a modest ASUS GTX 750Ti 2GB. He just purchased (what matters-) an i5-4460 and EVGA GTX 960 2GB SSC. While I plan on upgrading my CPU to a 4690K down the road, is there a GPU to make up for my current CPU's (dual-core) shortcomings? Assuming we're just using a benchmarking program or playing predominantly non-multicore games, which GPU will ensure I come out on top, if even just by a smidge? The R9 380 seems to be a good choice, however I've read it's (generally inferior) driver support along with poorer low-end fps performance (1080p) may render it not as good as the 960. The only options I see are older (discounted) cards like the 290 or just biting the bullet and grabbing a 970. Any help would be appreciated :)

AMD has improved their software a lot, and a 380 beats 960 in most games, even Nvidia optimized ones. If you had to choose between the two, I don't see a reason to go for 960 instead of 380.

Well with your inferior CPU and the fact that the 960 is nearly equal to a 380 (some instances the 380 takes the cake) you likely will still be close or he will be ahead. However, he was silly to buy a 960 2GB version. Youd likely need a 970 if you want to close the gap.

A 380 is a good GPU choice. This is assuming your power supply is strong enough to handle it. Your current GPU uses much less power than a 380 so If you previously chose the 750Ti for it's ability to run on weak power supplies you will need an upgrade.

The 960 also uses quite a bit less power than a 380 so that may be a better option depending on what power supply you have. If you do have the power supply to support a 380 that is probably your best choice though.

You will likely have to upgrade from your Pentium to at least an i3 for good performance in some games but depending on what you play it might not matter. Either the i5-4460 or the i5-4690k would make a huge difference for you in some games over your Pentium.

the 280x or even a 285 would beat the 960 by that little bit you're looking for as well. nvidia has nothing between the 960 and 970 but amd has these couple between the 280 and 290.
if course the newer 300 series is a bit better than the 200 series despite being the same chip on the board. so you got some options in case you don't want to go with the 970 or 390
