So I'm planning on building a new gameing/streaming PC. I have a budget of $1700. I also have a few (half dozen) Xeon E5-2680 v3. Due to the way I get them I cannot just sell the for funds.

1. Is there anyway to Speed up these free processors? (OCing or some other way)

2. Would it just be better for my money to not use the Xeon (or dual Xeons) all togethere and just go with a 4790k or 6700k.

It's been a long time since my last true from the ground up build and I want to build something that is as future proof as I can.

Solution
1. They are fast the way they are.
2. No. You have a beast for free. It is a freaken 12 core.

It IS pretty future proof for extreme rendering, editing and EXTREME multi-tasking. In gaming, it may become a very small bottleneck but it will have no problem keeping up even with 980 Ti's.

Hmm. 12 core Xeon for Gaming..... This chip will be fine as single core performance is apparently very good!

As far as I know overclocking any Xeon will likely give you minimal gains in respect to applications that only use a few cores. The CPU ratio/multiplier is locked so you really only have the Base clock to play with.

I checked a guide online on overclocking this chip and the authors of the guide found minimal room for overclocking. Also the chip has a 120w TDP and as such will put out a bit o heat as it is at stock voltage.

In regards to the GPU, I would take 970 SLI over a single 980 any day BUT if I were in the market for a new GPU just now .....I may hold fire to see what both Pascal and Polaris bring to table ( hopefully before the year is out!!). If you are keen to purchase a GPU right now then consider either 970 SLI or a GTX 980Ti . The single card solution to me is always more attractive than SLI and the 980Ti is almost as good as the 970's in SLI I believe!
