I have an I5 4690k, and a gtx 970 4gb, 8gb of ram. Would getting an i7 improve an performance, I have some room to upgrade should it be for the gpu or my cpu, what would make a difference in performance and what would you suggest. Particularly looking for something that is pretty good for it's price, or something like that I dunno.

Solution
I'd stick with what you have for now.
Only consider an i7 if you're regularly using software that needs or benefits from its 8 threads: rendering or video editing, otherwise, for gaming, there's not enough performance gain over the i5, you'll be better off adding a decent CPU cooler and overclocking the existing part.
Again, for gaming, the GTX970 is about as good as it gets for 1080 60Hz monitors, you could move up to the mighty GTX980Ti but it's better suited to either 1440 res or a fast Gsync display at 1080/1440. Switching to a GTX980 will be a help at 1080 if you're having issues with minimum frame rates in very demanding games but the cost is fairly significant, a little trimming of the settings will restore smoothness with...

Solution
If you have the ability to overclock the 4690K, you will get no important improvement in gaming.
If you have a motherboard that does not support overclocking, the I7-4790K has a higher stock speed and will do some good.
But, it will be cheaper to buy a proper Z97 motherboard to do the job.

GTX970 should run any game well at 1080P.
If you are thinking of a 1440P monitor or 4k gaming, then look at a GTX980ti or wait for pascal.

If you have money and the itch to upgrade, I have two suggestions:

1. Buy a ssd for windows and some games.

2. Buy a better monitor and keep your current monitor as a side monitor.
