Hi. I bought an upgrade copy of Win 7 many years ago, but never bothered to use the product key. I still run Vista, but bought a SSD recently and would like to make that use 7. I can't actually find my Vista disc, and the most recent disc I have is for XP. So.

Since my new SSD is blank, and I have an upgrade copy, do I first have disconnect all drives but the SSD and first install XP, then install Win 7? Or is there some sort of workaround that'll let me just use my product key to install a fresh copy of windows without all the PITA of installing 2 OSes? Will XP even install on a SSD?

Thanks,

Gnar

Ah....when you get software licenses from online resellers like that you usually get the licenses that have the least value (so highest mark-up).

It is good that Microsoft finds it valid though....you should be able to go right to Windows 10 then:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

You can create a full English ISO here and then enter your Win 7 key to activate (even on Win 10 now).

Apparently it is valid. Is that a full copy, no other install required? :)

There is a...snafu. I live in the USA. I speak the English. And in the language options, it's giving me French and Korean as options, and not English? I bought it from digital river back in '09. Help?

I can't get the image thing to work, so it's located here: http://prntscr.com/a5koe9

I'm in the Pacific Time zone and the region is set as USA English. Thoughts?

Thanks for taking the time, Geekwad. I've got more questions! :p Does that mean that English is a no-go with my key, and only languages I don't speak will work?

Much of what I've read talks about the nightmare of Win 10, which as I understand it is sometimes referred to as Win 8.x. I don't use a tablet, smartphone, or other things, and I value my privacy, so I've got concerns about Win 10 stealing my dataz. I don't want interconnection between my devices, and I don't want or need all the online inter-connectivity that MS is pushing in the form of OneDrive, the app store (they're called programs where I come from dangnabit), Xbox-connectivity, etc. The reason for going for 7 is that it's the last MS OS that isn't a godawful tablet abomination (Win 8) and doesn't seem...questionable...from a privacy perspective (10). Now I am frugal, so it's possible that if my choices are to create a Win 10 ISO & install that or buy a new English copy of Win 7 I might cheap out. Okay, I'll probably cheap out. :p But I'm really hoping you'll say that there's some way to make 7 work.

Now I do enjoy gaming, so Win 10 & Directx 12 has some appeal. But given that 50% of Steam's user base is on 7, I don't think it's going away anytime soon. It's partially that I'm a desktop guy, and partially that previous upgrades in OS have been somewhat tumultuous. I came from DOS and I spent several hours hunting for the 'My Computer' icon. Which changed to 'Computer' in the 2000s. Bah and humbug.

So currently, I'm running:

System:
AMD Phenom II 720 Black Edition /w giant tower cooler
Asus M4A79T Deluxe Mobo
Seasonic M12D PSU
Radeon 6870 Graphics Card (Yes, the one that sounds like you're inside a wind tunnel)
8 GB RAM
1 TB HDD
280 GB Raptor <- Current system drive
(new, hoping to install new OS on) 1 TB SSD
Yes, it's old. And about time for an upgrade, but research suggests that Polaris/Pascal and new/better chips are coming out SOON (TM).

If I install my OS now, will I need to buy another new copy of Windows when I upgrade the graphics card and CPU & Mobo? I vaguely remember hours spent on the phone with MS customer support in my younger years because I kept tinkering with the insides, and I had to call Every Bloody Time I reformatted & reinstalled (after the first few) and spend an hour or two on hold waiting to talk to India. Has that gotten better/changed? Or if I install Win 7/10 now am I going to have to talk to MS about my hardware change for hours?

Heh, that's a lot of text. Thanks for being so helpful. :)
