Why is my hard drive making this noise?

Got a Macintosh SE FDHD and the hard drive died after I cleaned it out today. Luckily it was a easily replaceable bit, although not cheap. Is it possible to fix the hard drive?

If the drive spins and works, you could in theory use any computer with old SCSI card and cables to copy/clone drive contents to the new drive.

In this case since it is ancient apple, I would choose cloning since... file formats are likely not something that new operating systems even want to handle.
In worst case, you could put in same type of SCSI hard disk and reinstall the OS on it. big question is.. where to get it unless you already have it.

it pretty much sounds like your hard drive motor can't get it's RPM up, tries a few times and resigns to it's fate as "dead"
Past that, there is also the source of said noise that would mean that there is something scratching the disk platters, meaning that even if the motor was not dead, the disk plates would be broken.

So, based on noise, and assumption it is the hard disk, it's broken, unrecoverable, unrepairable.

It is a ST-138N, but I'm sure there is a way to recover the data as long as the disk actually spins. Just found out these drives cost $50. I'll do anything to get this thing to work.
