Why did RAID mode lock my SSD?

Running a Crucial m500. Decided I wanted to add a RAID to my system using onboard controller (ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 Windows 10 64bit Home). Switched my sata config in bios to RAID which is basically an all or nothing affair. I can no longer access my SSD for a reinstall of windows? Windows repair says the drive is locked?

My best guesses are the encryption thats built into the M500. If I switch back to AHCI all is normal and I can boot into my old windows install but of course no RAID. Thoughts?

Normally you have to create an array first. This is done before entering the windows setup. Normally accessible from the bios or by its own hotkey on startup(control + I [Intel Matrix Storage] for instance on some boards).

Switching SATA modes will generally cause startup issues(a registry entry can allow booting when swapping raid to ahci/ide to ahcie/ct).

Please note that you will LOOSE ALL DATA on the SSD when creating this array and Raid0 is primarily for sequential read/write performance. It will NOT help the random access times(the main SSD advantage).

My purpose was to continue using my m500 as a boot drive with 2 mechanical drives in RAID 1. Why can't I access my SSD while in RAID mode to do a clean install of windows?
