8-pin CPU cable from PSU to 4-pin Female connector in Motherboard

My grandmother has an old motherboard and I've got two relatively new power supplies lying around. Hers just died so I tried to replace it with one of mine. But my power supplies only have 8-pin connectors. Could I just shove 4 of those in the slot or do I need a special cable?

Check the manual that came with the power supply. It should give you guidance on using the powersupply with a 4 pin motherboard.

Usually those 8 pin connectors will just attach on one side for a 4pin connector. I.e., you'll have 4 pins connected and to the left or right 4 pins not connected. Again, read the manual though.

If the PSUs only provide an 8-pin connector, then it should be two 4-pin connectors snapped together. Split the 8-pin into two 4-pin connectors and use only one of them.
