Hi all, I am upgrading this older system. Its a Dell Inspiron 531S Small Form Factor desktop.
1 Flashed Bios to 1.0.13ith with original Sempron chip installed and 4 GB of ram.
2 Upgraded CPU to AMD Athlon X2 6000+ (ADV6000IAA5DO) CPU 1000 MHz 3.1 GHz 89W Socket AM2+ used Artic Silver 5
3 System shuts down. I popped cover off and pointed an external Fan at CPU. Problem gone. So its a CPU cooling issue
I replaced original HSF thinking it might be bad even though fan spun.
Tried it with new HSF and still it overheated.
I cant find a HSF database. I need a HSF that will fit into this small tower and yet cool this hot chip

First, does your motherboard have the conventional AMD retention bracket like in this picture? http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/81JjR9tcYHL._SX522_.jpg
Some OEMs use a proprietary mount that won't accept standard coolers.
If that is your board and retention bracket, it should be easy to find a cooler on ebay for the 89W CPU. Any stock AMD cooler for their 95W - 125W CPUs will work. And they should be low profile enough to fit in the slimline case.

If you had a Sempron originally, its cooler would only have been either the 45W or 65W stock cooler.

Yes officer that's the culprit right there. : ) This is why I come to Tom's. Dell was about as helpful as mammary glands on a male Bovine.
I am eliminating choices as I go through. Lots of 3 pin fans, I need the 4 Pin model. You recommend 95W -125W, but most HSF's on Ebay list as up to 95W. which is the problem. The replacement I purchased is probably mislabeled. Do you know of any that are listed as 95w- 125w?

I only posted the list for 95W coolers. If you want the big 4 pipe 125W cooler, search for them too. But that cooler is a bit taller. Be sure it fits. Ex: http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-CPU-COOLING-FAN-FOR-PHENOM-II-BLACK-EDITION-X4-970-975-980-125W-AM2-AM3-NEW-/130749946608?hash=item1e714ddaf0:g:whAAAOSwl9BWLbxv
The 95W 4 pin cooler should be more than enough for an 89W processor unless the tiny case doesn't have good ventilation.

The problem finding a suitable cooler for that small case, is that full size aftermarket coolers may not fit. AMD only made 45W, 65W, 95W, and 125W coolers for that platform to my knowledge. Just those 4 sizes.

To some extent, yes. The stock coolers at the small end are basically a block of aluminum with a fan on top. They get thicker as they increase in TDP. (45W, 65W, 95W) Eventually, that doesn't do the job anymore as you get into the 125W CPUs, and it is necessary to use heat pipes to transfer heat from the CPU to the cooling fins where it is moved away by the fan.

No, because AMD keeps switching manufacturers for their coolers throughout the years. Contact the folks at the original-heatsinks store and they will help you out. (Scroll waaaaay down to the bottom of the page on the link I sent and use the ask a question link)

But the AMD 125W coolers are all the same TDP, size, mounting, design, etc. All interchangeable.
