Random FPS spikes in most games.

Hi

I get random fps drops in games that I should have no problem with. Dying Light for example. I can run it perfectly fine with at 60fps, (I capped it at 60fps) but after about 10 mins of playing it my frames drop to 20/30. Then go right back to 60.

I've been trying a lot of fixes that I've read about. But none of them seem to work. I have a AMD FX-9590 watercooled with a h80i GT. With coretemp the max temps only get up to about 50, sometimes 55 at full load. Which should be perfectly fine because it shouldn't start throttling until 70C.

I turned off the 'Cool n quiet' feature and ran my h80i GT in performance mode. It sounded like a jet but the same thing still happens and the temps are fine. I even downclocked my cpu to 4.0 Ghz, the temps are lower but the same thing still happens. I'm completely out of ideas.

Processor: AMD FX-9590 Eight-Core Processor
CPU Cooling: H80i GT Liquid Cooling
Video Card: AMD Radeon R9 380 4GB
Memory (Ram): 16 GB
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit
Case: CiT Vanquish Gaming

Anything else you need to know? I'm not sure on my PSU as this is an old computer I took and upgraded.

I'm not sure what the Wattage on it is. It doesn't say, but I'll find out, is there any desktop application I can use to find the psu model? If not I'll have to do some digging around.

Okay I found the psu wattage. It's 680, that might be the problem then. Going to upgrade to a 1000w and see if it fixes anything. If it doesn't, then the PSU will come in handy when I decide to upgrade my PC later on.

Video card temps are completely normal. 65C the whole time. It isn't windows 10 running a scan because the frames always spike.

Yeah, I'm not sure whether to just sell this cpu and get a i5 4690k, looks like a really good cpu and since Ive already got water-cooling I wont have a problem cooling it. What would you recommend?

Agh, Didn't realise I would need a new mobo as well. My build is brand new so I think I'll keep it for now. If a new psu fixes my issues there's really no point in switching over to intel.

I've got some more info on what might be causing my problem. I think it is the psu, because when I turn 'Cool n Quiet' off my frames drop more often. Which makes sense since having 'Cool n Quiet' off increases power usage. Would you say that makes sense? I'm really hoping this fixes my issues, because if it doesn't then I'm going to have to spend even more money on switching over to Intel. Was hoping to upgrade my graphics card to a Gtx 980, but I guess that will have to wait.

I figured out the real reason why I keep getting spikes. My motherboard throttles the 9590 under load. I have a Asrock 990fx extreme 3 which is not good enough for the 9590. It's a shame I didn't do my research before buying this. I'm going to get a Gigabyte Ga 990fx Gaming Motherboard.

Here's the link to it: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5655#ov

I have, I checked the list, checked a different website and watched a review on youtube on it. They all said that it is supported.

I'm also ordering a 850W EVGA Gold power supply in about a month. After all that hopefully my issues are resolved and I can start saving up for a new graphics card.

Alright so the board came a couple days ago and I got it installed a couple days ago. It fixed my problems. I'm now just messing about with the voltage and I'm going to get some new fans for my H80i GT because the stock ones sound like a jet taking off. My temps are really good. With Prime95 running for about 2 hours I get no errors and temps stay below 45C which is really good for a 9590 chip. I'm also now waiting for Nvidia and AMD to release their new GPU's so I can upgrade. No point in upgrading now to a 980 Ti because DX 12 is going to be in most games in the future. So I'm waiting to see what AMD or Nvidia come up with so I can upgrade to that.
