Hey guys im new to overclocking so i used the 5 way optimisation software that came with my motherboard the Maximus Hero VIII.

The first OC got to 4.8mhz, when i play counterstrike for example temperatures would be around 50-65c on average but every now and again it would just up to maybe 79-83c which made me get a little worried, especially because it was fluctuating, jumping up to 83 then immediately back down to 65 etc

I decided i would not overclock it so much so i set 4.6mhz as a target and reached that, i then stress tested using AIDA64 my results showed :

some cores hit between 84-88c at max but the average temps over the 1 hour test was 50-60c temps

Should i be looking at the average temperature or max temps ? should i be concerned ? i just want to overclock and get a little more performance out of my cpu but i dont want to push it too its limits where it would have a large impact on lifespan

CPU Cooler H100I GTX

Since you are reaching maximum temps of over 80 degrees then this is a problem. Your CPU is good enough to run everything without overclock but you are going to reduce its lifespan by overclocking it like this. Try manual overclock if you want to keep it on 4.6 but in my eyes just leave it at base clock and don't try to kill it. You will not see performance losses in the next 4 years. Maximum VCORE recommended for water cooling is 1.32v, personally I would not go past 1.30, so if you want try setting it manually to 1.30 and setting the speed to 4.6Ghz and see if it's stable.

You should definitely look core temperatures. 84-88 is quite hot I believe. Do not look the cpu temp that Ai suite shows. Also do not use 5 way optimastion.. It is not good and you wiil end up with a bad unstable overclock. Aida also is not a very good test for me. Download Realbench from Asus rog. You are seeing so high temps because the voltage is way too high. Your vcore should be under 1.4v max.. My 6700k is not a oc diamond and I reached 4.5ghz with 1.35v and llc 5. If you google i7 6700k overclock guide you should find great resources to help you continue your overclock journey.

Do a manual overclock. You should be able to manually overclock your CPU by setting the multiplier to 45, Vcore start at 1.3. I wouldnt use software for overclocking, just the UEFi bios. I have the same mobo and CPU and I am running 4.6Ghz on a 1.29 voltage with LLC5.
