so i know that a constant clicking noise means the hdd is bad but this only does it when writing data. like massive amounts of data... i just got done building my gaming pc and used my old 2tb hdd which although it had a fall recently seems to be working fine. After about 20 minutes in to downloading most of my games (around 300gb) it started clicking 3 clickes then like a 10 second pause. it is pluged into a 6gbs sata port if that matters. So is the hdd going or was it just writing too fast?? at the time of this post im creating backups of it and it doesnt seem to be making the noise while reading.

Download HD TUNE, --> click ERROR SCAN and run full scan (do not tick quick scan as it never reveals errors)
leave it overnight as it might take 4-7 hours.
If You will see any red squares than do not rely on this hard drive anymore.

Make a backup first. Then as Alpha Omega stated run HDTune. In addition, run CrystalDiskInfo. Look for re-allocated sectors raw value. If this number is >1 replace the drive.

Any kind of clicking sound is bad; even intermittent clicking is bad. Do not risk your valuable data on a clicking hard drive. Some drives have early failures while others may run fine for years. And there is also the possibility of a bad batch that slipped by during production.
