My g1.assassin 2 comes with a built in e2100, which has no support for linux. This means I have resorted to using a usb 2.0 wifi stick, which gives me less than half the speeds, heats up and comes with the burdens that wifi does like instability and insecurity etc.
This won't work, especially not on my gaming rig, so I have done some research and have narrowed it down to the question of:
USB 3.0 to ethernet adapter
or a
PCI network card

I like the idea of how easy the usb device would be to switch to another computer (thought i would probably never use that functionality).
Any input is appreciated.

Hello... a dedicate "hardware" device for that one purpose is the best... your USB ports has many shared devices "requests" on it.
There are "Software" "soft modems" and "Hardware" in PCI-PCIe types, the "software" versions will use your CPU for the Hardware.

A generic 1GbE PCI/PCIe card from D-Link and most other manufacturers costs less than $40 and should be compatible with nearly all OSes past, present and future. Unless you plan to switch the USB2/3 adapter between PC, going PCI(e) should be the least troublesome and most reliable option.

Not many suprises here, I didn't think that the usb would be the best option, and it is a bit more expensive anyways. I just don't like an extra card in my case, as it has a large glass side panel and it looks so clean right now :'(. I'll get myself a pci gigabit card this week then.

I'll be going with the pci card then.

oh no, you mustn't spoil the looks of your rig, just go with the shitty solution that looks better! me when i play games, i look all the time inside my casing to see all those beautiful wires and chips doing nothing, while wonderful fans rotate, i mean it's like a symphony... and the colour of my RAM really goes with my eyes...
