Temperature is high

I recently built my own computer and it has thermal paste and a cpu cooler. I played Division at ultra high settings and when i checked my MSI afterburn the temperature was 80 degrees Celcius at fan speed of 70-85% is this normal or theres something wrong with my computer?

Specs:
i5 6600k
MSI 980 Ti
noctua nh d14 - cpu cooler
Evga 850W Gold
nzxt s340 mid tower cASE
gIGABYTE G1 Gaming GA-Z170

Are you overclocked? That temperature seems quite high for stock settings with a NH-D14 cooler. I would recommend reapplying the thermal paste (using the pea method and then using a old credit card to spread a thin layer over the entire processor then mount the heat sink) and ensuring the heat sink is mounted properly. Also make sure that you have both fans mounted and they are in their proper push pull configuration. You should also check your fan curve settings, when you processor is at 80C your fan should be at 100% not topping at 85%.

Never let your fans slow down! See what happens when the computer controls the fan?

Blow off the heatsink fins with compressed air.

Also, nobody but me seems to care, but the inside of the case is about 10ºC hotter than the room's temp. Open the side and aim a desk fan in. Amazing results. My sys is spread out on a table next to my bed, both for heat and E-Z access to hack with it.

Most likely your heatsink is just too diminutive. Get a cheap one-piece water cooling sys for 100 bux.

"Most likely your heatsink is just too diminutive" did you see in the OP's post that he has a NH-D14? How much larger of a heat sink should he be running? The NH-D14 outperforms a lot of lower end water coolers and holds its own even against a H100i. With a NH-D14 installed the only thing that would make sense is a "pocket" of air in the thermal compound- ie OP needs to reapply thermal compound using the pea method and the fan curves need to be setup so when approaching higher temps the fans are at 100% and are installed in a proper push pull configuration.

The thermal compound should be reapplied though as at 85% fan speed a NH-D14 should still effectively cool a stock i5 6600K. There has to be a bare spot in the thermal compound (ie pocket) or the heat sink isn't properly mounted, reapplying the thermal compound addresses both problems. Other than that make sure the fans are in their proper push pull configuration and make sure you setup the fan curve properly (I usually set it so that anything past 55 - 60C the fans are at 100%).

Nope!

Nor either do I care. If he makes all the usual checks and it still gets THAT hot, his cooling subsystem isn't up to the task and he needs watercooling.

Mmm... wrong again, Albert. It doesn't get THAT hot with no paste at all.(G'wan, try it, I'll wait!) A pocket of air wouldn't degrade performance that much.

Right now, Vegas is giving 3 to 1 that his CPU is just too hot for a heatsink and needs water.

Matter of fact, I could use another drank m'self.

Totally missed that:ouch: You are totally correct, GPU temp 80C is fine. I thought he was talking about CPU temp, not GPU temp.

It's inferred, but probably a GPU temp, you can/could get plugins that show CPU temp. But it's fiddly enough that it would have been mentioned.

I did miss that OP was registering GPU temp in Afterburner, however you should really brush up on aftermarket coolers if you are going to be giving people advice in cooling. The NH-D14 is one of the best aftermarket coolers on the market period. It can easily hold its own against even the H100i, and beat out lesser water coolers. As an added bonus with the NH-D14 or NH-D15 you don't have to worry about pump failures or coolant leaks.

Somehow I missed that he was registering the temperature in Afterburner, totally embarrassing....
