What performance will I get if I connect a desktop gpu to my laptop?

Specs:
i7 4700MQ quad core 2.4ghz
GPU: gt 745m
Ram: 8gb ddr3
Display:1920x1080

I am thinking of connecting a gtx 970 or r9 390? Should I get something more low end, and what kind of psu will I need? Also will performance be equivalent to a desktop with the same or around the same specs?

Im still reading articles and watching videos about it. However I am not entirely sure how to do it, I think I have to connect it with the motherboard or I think maybe by using a thunderbolt connection. Plz correct me if I am wrong, I'm still learning how to do it. Also what performance will I get with an r9 390 and what psu will I need. Thank u!!!

I mean I wanted to run witcher 3 at 1080p maybe a gtx 950 can do that?
Also since you know how to connect the gpu to the laptop can you plz explain it to me. Thank you so much!!!!!
