im willing to upgrade my pc from an old E8400 , im wondering which is better option , either to get the i5-6400 or 4460 OR get an i3-4170 and save up to $170 from the diffrenet cpu, mobo&ram compared to the i5-6400

is their a huge performance between i3-4170 and i5- 6400 for gaming?

+ can any1 expalin what is passmark score and how its an important factor to consider

Cpu boss site claims that i5-4460 is faster in terms of single core performance and Cpu world claims the opposite ~ im so confused

Thanks

NEVER USE cpuboss and cpuworld. The only somewhat decent benchmark site is cpubenchmark.net. Otherwise, it is important to looks at real benchmarks found in videos, on websites, on forums etc.

In general: i5-6400 (4 core Skylake) = i5-4460 (4 core Haswell) > i3-4170 (dual core with HT Haswell).

What you get depends on what you want. If you want a hardcore gaming PC, go for one of the i5's - I recommend the i5-6400 (or i5-6500) since it is a newer platform and will have some kind of upgrade path in the future.

If you are a mild gamer and will not spend much on the GPU, if you play casually, or if you do not game at all, get the i3 (I would actually go with the Skylake i3-6100 and LGA1151 platform)

It's best to list all of the parts you currently have. What parts you would like to upgrade, and how much you are wanting to spend on upgrades.

The two i5s are nearly identical in real world performance, and would outperform the i3 in multi-threaded tasks.
