To anyone who thinks skylake is sooo expensive. Its not!

I made two builds that you would most likely include these cpu's in. Guess what?! Skyplake and ddr4 memory is only $20 more in this ~$1000 build
And that is with DDR4 2400 (since its only $2 more than the 2133)
The motherboard and ram wont cost more at all, only the cpu costs a bit more, but skylake also provides more performance from the cpu and ram that more makes up for the $20.

Update: Obviously as time goes on the prices of both builds will change, but skylake will never be stupidly expensive in a build like this. That was my point.

i5 4690k ddr3 1600 - $962.50

i5 6600k ddr4 2400 - $982.67

Skylake is a tad more expensive, cpu to cpu. In the past when a new chip came out it was almost the same exact price as the cpu before it. Not only did the skylake i5 k series go up around $25 it also left out the stock cooler. Maybe not a huge cost and not overly important for those who use aftermarket coolers but they still hiked the price and dropped the value. The i5 6600k cannot be run straight out of the box at all since it lacks a cooler. A bit sad they hiked the price and left out previously included hardware.

The i7 6700k pricing is ridiculous compared to the previous 4790k. $130 more than the skylake i5 6600k just for hyper threading, not much of a bargain at all. For over $100 I'd hope for something extra like actual cores...
Skylake is only really overpriced if you're looking at the i7 6700k as your CPU, which is selling for something like 70 dollars over MSRP right now due to that chip still being in short supply after 5 months. If you need more than 4 threads, then Haswell or even Haswell-E is going to be better value. If you're looking at i5s or lower, then Skylake isn't going to be much more expensive unless you're comparing it against Haswell products that are on sale with significant discounts as retailers try to clear out some of the older stock.

Cool man. Sidebar: I've been meaning to try out one of those Cryorig H7 coolers. I'm also a big fan of those MSI GTX 970 4G Gaming cards. I think your memory might be better served by going with 2 x 8GB, instead of 4 x 4GB; unless you're going for quad channel. One thing about Skylake that really ticks me off with Intel is how they make the substrate thinner. It's resulted in those reports of people bending their processors:

Intel Skylake Processors Can Bend Under Pressure, Damage CPU and LGA Socket

yes yes yes and yes
Cryborig H7 allows really nice oc's for how cheap it is, beats the 212 evo by far! (mines in the mail waiting for me to oc my 4690k)
Yeah! the msi 970 is a beast to OC and its the cheapest right now!? like whaat
I switched it over to 2x8 gb but was just doin quad channel on the comparison for fun. I dont think the 1 fps gain from quad channel makes up for it costing $10 more. Usually they skylake cpu's don't bend unless you move your system often, So don't touch it :p
Also msi is making the cpu guard which will protect your skylake cpu from bending.

Going 'quad channel' on skylake 1151 is nonexistent. Use 2x 8gb or 4x 4gb, skylake only runs dual channel memory on 1151. You'd need x99 (2011v3) to run quad channel. Simply using 4 sticks isn't what determines how many memory channels are available.

Interesting information, As for the 4690k coming with a stock cooler and skylake not, you buy a 4690k to overclock, who would buy a 4690k and not plan to overclock (which you need an aftermarket cooler for)

Yes i bought a 4690k and slapped stock cooler on, but I had the intent of overclocking in the near future.. If my damn H7 wasnt in the mail for 2 months. WTF amazon? How is this 2 day shipping :(

You are not wrong if you are starting with nothing but most people upgrade part of a machine at a time.

If you already have a machine to upgrade you simply don;t get bang for your buck going skylake. If you already had DDR3 RAM your builds end up a fair amount more expensive because now you need to buy new RAM which you don't for Haswell and you don't really get much better performance by going skylake and DDR4. That cost is easier to swallow if you actually get gains for it but you don't. This is always the Dilemma when new memory standards come out. When the first i5/i7s came out and required DDR3 (Core 2 being DDR2 or DDR3) people had the same dilemma.

Now, DDR4 is getting cheaper and every platform will use it within 6 months (even AMD) so everyone has to make the move sometime. If you already have Ivy Bridge or Haswell, you should wait for the next releases though because you won't get bang for buck by upgrading. Even if you have Sandy or FX-8XXX you might as well wait and see at this point because the gains just aren't there and a good cooler and overclock can keep you in the game. Zen will either change the game completely or it will suck and we'll all have to go to Kaby Lake and DDR4 then.

Skylake is very expensive and all Intel chips became over priced right after Ivy Bridge and this is all due to AMD not being a viable competitor. So you guys can put up stats all you want and jock ride Intel. The truth still stands they are abusing the fact that they have no competition, this is why being a fan boy is stupid. BECAUSE without proper competition, we the consumer will pay dearly. Intel had won the CPU wars, the consumer lost their wallets. This is business boys and girls. So yes, INTEL SKYLAKE IS OVERPRICED!!!

It may depend on location, though I don't see most of skylake being much different in price. I also haven't seen intel cpu's increase in price since ivy bridge. For instance the i5 3570k was around $225 at release, the latest price pcpartpicker listed for it was $233. The i5 4670k was $227. The 4690k is still available for $225. More examples could be given (though redundant) however suggesting that intel cpu's suddenly increased in price after ivy bridge isn't true at all.

An ivy locked i5 like the 3550 was $205, the 4570 is $193, the 4590 is $190, the skylake 6500 is $199. This is u.s. pricing, prices from other regions may be different. There's proving to be less and less truth to the argument that intel is wildly jacking up prices, making the customer pay and so forth.

Why does everybody get so hyped about overclocking? IMO you don't need to constantly overclock everything! I tried it once and all it did was cause problems. Besides if you get something like like an i5 6600 non-k then you save money and it will last you a Loooonnnggg time without overclocking. I think its stupid

This thread isnt about overclocking please start a new thread if you wanted to give you opinion on overclocking, as no one here cares what you have to say
