Whilst i am gaming my PC will randomly freeze and lock up, becoming completely unresponsive. The screen freezes at whatever part of the game i managed to get up to, sound stops, the PC stops accepting Keyboard input and i am forced to reset the computer using the power button.

When i check event viewer there are never really any error messages except the ones created by me forcing the computer to restart.

I originally had this issue on windows 8.1. It was around the time i just upgraded a large amount of my PC (Graphics, Motherboard, Memory, CPU). It seems as though i am able to play directx 10 games fine and without problems, but when i try a Directx 11 game i run into these crashes and lockups anywhere from 5 mins to over an hour into gameplay. The best example of this i can think of is GTA:5, when i set it to Dx10 it runs fine. Change to DX11 and lockups.

I upgraded to windows 10 hoping it would solve my issues but instead they just continued on. I have spent months working on solving this issue to no avail. during this time i have reinstalled every driver atleast 10 times over, Repaired, Reset and Reformatted windows 10 countless times, reseated the memory and ran memory checks, reseated the graphics card, Flashed the BIOS, Validated the game files in steam and played games on both recommended settings and Low settings.

Most recently i have Reformatted my HDD and performed a clean install of Windows 8.1, reinstalled all the latest drivers, reinstalled steam and a game and the problem still persists.

Please if anybody has any suggestions on how i can fix this problem, i'll try anything.
I also apologise for the wall of text and many possible typos, its been another long night of blind troubleshooting :p

oh! specs:
MoBo: Asus Sabretooth 990fx Rv2.0
processor: AMD FX-9590 8core 4.7GHz
Graphics: Asus ROG GTX 760 Striker Platimun 4GB

Need anymore info please let me know.

well known issue with that processor

you are most likely going to need to underclock it or do some other settings tweaking to get stable

make sure your motherboard bios is up to date

Disable Cool-N-Quiet and the C1E, C6 states in the CPU settings in the BIOS

disable turboclock

make sure you manually set your ram timings, dont let this sit on AUTO settings

If none of those things work, then set CPU Core multiplier to 20x instead of 23.5x

the 9590 is terrible...

Thanks for the reply Maxalge, unfortunately Im slightly clueless as to where to change these settings. i assume in the BIOS?

The Bios is the most up to date availiable for the motherboard (2501), it was one of the more recent things i attempted to fix my issue.

when you say 'manually set the RAM timings', i noticed the RAM is set to 1333 in Bios, i assume you mean change this to 1866?

I am in an unfortunate situation with computers where i know a little to much and nowhere near enough, could you please confirm how i do the things you suggested as making BIOS changes quite simply scares me. I am hopefull though since you say its well know issues that i can finally solve this problem, as none of my troubleshooting thus far has actually been directed at the CPU.

Update: whilst looking through the BIOS i have also noticed that in advanced settings, North Bridge it says Initiate Graphics Adapter which is set to PEG/PCI, should this be the other way round? (PCI/PEG)

yes all those settings are accessed thru the bios

PEG should be primary if you have a discreet gpu

the settings you want to change should be under the "ADVANCED" and "AI TWEAKER" tabs in the bios

for example under advanced > cpu configuration

always disabled: cool n quiet
disabled: C1E state
disabled: c6 state
disabled: HPC mode
Apm master mode: auto

and yes, look up the specs on your ram, should be something like :

9-10-9-27 1866 1.5v ( this is different depending on the particular ram you have )

make sure to set the proper dram voltage and speed - 1866mhz, 1.5v for example

dont forget to save settings before exiting the bios

I have just got back and made the changes as you suggest.

Cool n Quiet was set to Disabled by CPU, changed this to Always Disabled
C1E State was already disabled, made no changes
C6 State was enabled, Changed to Disabled
HPC Mode was also already Disabled, made no changes
APM Master Mode was already set to Auto, made no changes

i changed the RAM speed from 1333mhz to 1866mhz
I Found DRAM Voltage in CPU Config, but was unable to change this setting atall. it is however set to 1.4 so im assuming this is ok? when i looked up my RAM it is 9-10-9-27 1866mhz 1.5v

that can lead to instability, you need to change it to it's rated 1.5v

it seems to fluctuate between 1.485 and 1.498, as i said though i see no way of actually changing it. i can only highlight the box next to it which says 'auto'

Update: Figured out how to change the setting, memory voltage is now set at 1.5. I'll test at these settings for a while and see if they help or if the problem persists

Hey man, I know I'm 2 years late with your response. Sounds like you have a really really tough time trying to get your games fix. I am literally having this exact same issues with my newly customized $1,180 gaming PC which I built it last month. I download 3 steam games so far and I am literally having these same issues. It like literally locks up my PC mostly during in-gameplay for some reason. I have an AMD build also. It has a

CPU: Ryzen 5 1600X
MOBO: B350-F Gaming Strix
MEMORY: 16GB of RAM
GPU: Asus ROG Strix RX 580 8GB

So I even tried all of the previous solutions in your listings. I reset Windows and try to tweak my BIOS settings a little bit overclocking and on default. I even went to battery performance and set it to high. Nothing works. Is it my PC, Windows or a Steam problem? I want to know what is the best possible solutions without having to go through countless of hours of troubleshooting to no avail.
