Is getting quad band RAM worth it over dual band?

I'm upgrading my RAM and thinking of getting either dual band (2x8GB) or quad band (4x4GB). The quad band is slightly more expensive by about $15 and I was wondering, is it worth it? I'm no expert and was wondering if the difference is significant enough. Thanks!

Solution
The term is channel.

If you're using LGA2011 or LGA2011-3 (which both have a quad-channel memory controller), there's a slight improvement. Could be lots depending on the application.

For pretty much every other socket (LGA115x, FMx, AMx), two sticks will be the same speed, or possibly very very slightly faster.

$15 is more difference than I'd expect.

Do you have a quad channel motherboard? There is no such thing as dual or quad channel modules; dual channel requires 2 modules while quad channel requires 4 modules. Buying a kit is better because they are from the same batch and they should have consecutive serial numbers. If your motherboard supports quad channel, then it's faster, particularly when running memory benchmarks, but less significant for other tasks: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2982965/components/quad-channel-ram-vs-dual-channel-ram-the-shocking-truth-about-their-performance.html
