So i have ran into a really bad situation: I have recently purchase a Colorful gtx 960 igame (a brand from China) which has a backplate on it. I didn't expect it wouldn't fit in the PCI 3.0x16 slot on my mainboard (Asrock B85M Pro4) due to the ram clip so i have to install the GPU on the PCI 2.0x16 slot. And after 5 days i realized that the slot just ran at x4 bandwith :(. The card is really bottlenecked here, I cant remove the backplate because it will void warranty.
Any help will be appreciated. Should i just cut off the ram clip or purchase a new motherboard. I wonder if the ASROCK b85 fatality could fit the GPU or not.

Solution
I can't correctly use a pcie extender with the gpu in my case. I think i just have to live with it and save money to buy a new mobo. And I want to give a headsup that all pc users should double check the mobo before purchasing any big gpu with backplate on it. Anyway have a nice weekend everyone ;)
Are you sure it's bottlenecked, or it's just something you 'feel' is happening? Do you get significantly lower framerates than what is shown in reviews? 'Cause that may not be the case:
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GTX_980_PCI-Express_Scaling/1.html

They tested a 980, and only found upto 5% performance loss. You'll get similar results as it's CPU-GPU communication, but I don't think you'll notice the difference.

Also, yours will be a chipset-connected bus as they say on the last page.

Thanks for the infor. The PCIE slot is a 2.0x16@x4 mode sadly, it really decreases lots of performance on certain games. i closed all the clip, i just didnt know how the backplate could be this thick.

Can you post a picture of the graphics card ("profile")?
An option would be a PCie extender, but not sure if you can safely mount the card in the case.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_bJilAqpjc I found a video of the exact card on youtube.
Can i use the PCie extender and put the card somewhere on the pci slot of the case?

It explains it now. I was quite confused. In my opinion, the only option (apart from returning the card), would be a PCie extender and modifying the case so that you can install the card and use its ports.

Thanks everyone a lot .I think the pcie extender is the cheapest and safest way to deal with my problem( dont have to break the ram clip or a new MB) now because i still have 2 empty pci bracket near my psu. Maybe i'll give it a shot and report back to you guys later.

Checked that out, and yeah, now I know what you mean. Man, that's just bad design.

Sadly, I don't think even mini-ITX cards will come to your rescue; the slot is too near the RAM retainers.

An extender is always an option, but the question then is where you'd put your card.

Another(unlikely) option is that you could trade in your motherboard for another one. Modern motherboards from Asus have the RAM retainers only on the right side. So one of the B85's might solve your problem.

Of course, if the motherboard is old, you might not be able to return it.
