My friend has this 4th Gen i5, not sure which model exactly. Been looking for a good motherboard. Wont be overclocking, will be running in a hot environment (29+ degrees cel')

Currently he has a GTX750 and 4x4gb of ram from Kingston hyper x.

And a 500W PSU I guess.

We have a specific model in mind

Gigabyte B85M-D3H...is it any good? should run for at least 4-5 years. I dont know much of what happens on the intel platform, I am not in touch.

Solution
If it has 4th gen I5 then it is on FCLGA 1150 socket with the exception being the Intel® Core™ i5-4570R which needs a FCBGA1364. A H97 chipset would be best if you are not overclocking. Chipsets for FCLGA1150 are these in the order they came out : H81,B85,Q85,Q87,H87,H97,Z87,Z97.

So the Q85/ B85M very low end and rubbish or something for the 4th Gen i5 in question?

because on the AMD side I needed a 970 chipset for an fx8320. Many experts highly reccomended it for some reason. Like if I went for a lower/ older chipset they said it might throttle CPU etc, heat blah blah. Does the same stand true for Intel architecture? pair a high end processor with a high end chipset? or can you simply go for a lower end chipset and a high end processor? whats Intel like?

Well chipsets come with different upgrades and obviously it would be wise to pair latest chipset with any CPU. For AMDs 125W CPUs like the one you mentioned there are really only 2 good motherboards with the 970 chipset and those are the MSI Gaming and the Gigabyte 970A-UD3P. 970 is not the latest chipset for AM3+ socket.
