while watching Shomi using our laptop and a wireless connection, for some reason it wants to buffer quite often. Our bedroom is located above where the wirless router is located and we have batts of Rockwool sound proofing insulation between floors, can this cause issues with the wifi??

Solution
Any matter between the router and laptop radios will decrease the signal strength, the denser the material the greater the attenuation. Generally though, wireless radios do not do well vertically between floors compared to horizontally on one level.

If this is a significant issue for you, I would place an access point (actually an inexpensive router like a Tp-Link configured as an AP) on the second floor and connect it to the main router with a pair of AC1200 MIMO capable powerline adapters (or an Ethernet cable if feasible). That will give you an excellent quality signal on the upper floor.

What does the strength meter says?

Nothing you do can about it right, not gonna rip off the insulation are we?

Move router, add ext antenna, add second router, wired, those are the options. Just make sure this only happens at that one location else is something else.

Hey jsmithepa,
I want to thank you for your input, and no I am not going to rip off the insulation. There was far too much work putting all of it up between the floor joists, lol. You have a really good point of view and sometimes it is far better to do the little changes instead of some huge change.
Take care and thanks again,
