I am currently looking at a future upgrade for my custom pc build. Specifically, I am looking at getting a K series cpu that I can overclock for better performance and more future proof for gaming. My specs are as follows:
i5 4690 cpu (stock cooler)
MSI Twin Frozr gtx 970 gpu
MSI z97 pc mate motherboard
8 gb ballistix sports ram
cosair cx750m power supply
Acer P236h 1920x1080p monitor

I am torn between the i5 4690k and the i7 4790k. If i go with the i7 right now I will need to wait a couple months or so before I can afford to get a good enough aftermarket cooler to get the most out of this cpu, and also the hyperthreading would come in handy for reasons I will explain. If I go with the i5, however, I can go ahead and get a good aftermarket cooler and get killer performance out of that and my gpu right away.
I also eventually want to do a youtube channel where I will do recordings of gameplay and have a gaming and tech channel. Nothing too fancy to start out with, just some possible light editing and what not. the main focus of this build however is getting good pc performance for gaming. This is where my dilemma between the i7 and i5 comes into play. I can live with not having graphics completely maxed out. However, I do prefer not to run the graphics any lower than high in most cases and if I have a framerate of around 45 or higher I am happy. I eventually want to upgrade to 1440p gaming and am looking for about the same performance on high-ultra settings on most high end games, though I am not considering 1440p monitors for another year or two, which by then I plan on upgrading my gpu.

From what I understand both of these cpus can run similarly in gaming performance given they both have similar overclocking done to them (if this is not the case someone please explain to me why not). My biggest question is whether or not an i5 can do the light video editing and live streaming I am wanting to do for the time being or should I fork out more money for the i7 even though I am not hardcore into editing/live streaming yet? Any further tips and advice as far as what kind of aftermarket coolers would be best for the money would also be appreciated. For example, whether I should go air cooling or liquid cooling, brands, etc. Thanks!

Go with the i7 and get the custom cooler later on. You only need an after market cooler if you are overclocking which really wouldn't give a better gaming performance with an i7 4790 k. Should you get the i7 , your system will be far more future proof and see you having to consider an upgrade far later than with an i5..

Seeing as you said that you are "not hardcore into editing/live streaming yet" I would definitely save up for the i7 as it would benefit you much more when working with those things.

Going from an i5-4690 to an i5-4690K isn't an upgrade. That's a sidegrade(upgrade to the side instead of going up.) You really should just go straight to the i7 that you're looking at. You could use the stock cooler for now and enjoy all the benefits of the i7. Then when you have the money for the fancy cooler you can 'upgrade' your i7 by overclocking it.

Interesting. Thanks for the input. Looks like I'll be looking at upgrading to an i7.
