i have a sandisk ultra 32gb sd card which comes up needs to format and shows card size of only 30.61mb.
tried many recovery softwares but none seem to work.
I'm in a situation where the data is more important than the card.

Hey there!

I guess I have to go with the obligatory "you should never, ever store important data on a USB flash drive or an SD card if you don't have it backed up anywhere else", but unfortunately, it seems like you've learned this the hard way. :(
First, try the SD card with a different card reader/device, to see if the same thing happens. If that doesn't help, try to access it via Ubuntu Live USB/DVD, to see if it's properly recognized and if you can get to your files and recover them. Another option would be to try out data recovery programs like the ones suggested in these links: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html & http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file-recovery-programs.htm. And last, but not least, if all else fails - you could go for professional help such as a data recovery company.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how it goes. Good luck!

I just took it from the action cam to transfer data to my PC when this happened, did not get the chance to even copy it let alone taking a backup of it, which i generally do.
can i install linux on a usb stick and try it that way??

linux wouldn't help.

If the card is reporting as 30mb, not 32Gb there is a hardware fault.
Check in partition manager that you do not have unpartitioned space.

It's an unusual error. typically clustes get wiped or corrupted or the MBR does and all is lost.
Card size is built into the firmware of the card. and can't be changed. Your computer cannot access space it doesn't know about.
So until the card size is reported correctly, no recovery software can help.
