Should I leave my computer on all the time or turn it off

For the last 2 years I've been leaving my computer on practically 24/7, shutting it down only once a week or two to boost performance. My friend recently told me this was detrimental to my components.

I have an FX 8350, R9 290, about 3 case fans, a heatsink for the CPU and the GPU fan on 70%, that's pretty much how it's always been.

My question is should I continue to just leave it on, and turn off the monitors when I'm stepping out for a long period (I have two monitors,) or rather just turn it off when I'm leaving it for a few hours.

Any help is appreciated.

I read a long time ago that every time you turn off the computer, it ages 8 hours. Because heat expands components, when they cool down they retract.
But even so, components last years and years. I think the example was about HDDs and I'm still using 10 year old HDDs, working just fine. I turn off computer every day.

I switch on my computer every night, I switch it off later that night after I finished using it, I use it everyday, this was the same with my old computer, it's still working, I bought it back in 2011 and it was switched on and switched off every day. It's still working but I left it at the family home so someone can use it to use as I needed a much more powerful PC. I was still gaming on my old PC, Battlefield 4, H1Z1 and CS:GO

Both have pro's and cons of keeping a PC on and switching it off daily (or from time to time)
