I upgraded to i5-4460 recently and then sold my old i3 in a spare system for 200$. The 270x runs way better now and it got me thinking about using that 200$ to get a 960 or best Nvidia at that price point. Not interested in AMD again.

Spending more on a higher card is not an option right now. I'm not really sure if the improvement I will get is worth it or to just wait and in 6 months purchase a 970 or it's equivalent.

I know a 960 would be run better, but not sure if it's going to be enough power for upcoming AAA titles. I'm fine running in 1080p 60fps medium settings with effects / AA off.

One thing that was making me think of upgrading was the benchmarks I see of this card compared to mine.. Techspot does metal gear v test, my card gets 40fps average on max settings the 960 gets 59fps, 950 gets 52fps.. I've seen things like this one multiple games. Witcher 3 1080p low has 52fps on 270x and 66 on the 960. The 960 also never dips below 40fps even once whereas the 270x drops into the 20s

I know when you just compare the card specs and all the 270x should out perform both, but it seems every game made today is made to run better on NVIDIA

DustinV, I wish that were an option. I would need to find a decent one for 300$ and then sell what I have for 100$. Both of those options seem unlikely. I'm also tempted to wait and see how Pascal is, but I worry I will have trouble running the division and dark souls 3 on good settings

It's very much an option and is very likely to happen as I have done it

MSI gtx 970- $309.99

I sold my gtx 750 ti for $100 on ebay, i bet you could get more for the 270x

I bet those games run better on the 270x today. When those benchmarks came out AMD probably did not have a driver optimizing for that specifc game, nvidia on the other hands sometimes realeses drivers optimizing for games before they even come out.

But regardless spending 200 dollars plus to "upgrade" your 270x to a 960 is in my opinion a waste of money even if it does perform better. My advice would be to have a little patience and save up to get a gpu that is a lot more powerful than your 270x.

That's a really great point that I had not considered. I was actually looking at the witcher 3 benchmarks earlier and they were talking about how the AMD drivers delayed the test by 7 hours. They had to use old drivers on some cards and some would just crash. It was a pretty big issue at first so yeah I guess that could make a big difference.

I had previously used my card more carefully as far as heat / usage goes in favor of longer life. Now that i'm considering upgrading it probably makes more sense to push it harder and get better usage. If it fails then I get the 960 and if it holds out then I get the 970 in the near future.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I'm going to pass on the GTX 960 and also start pushing my card a bit harder to get more from it. If I get good results then I think I will wait until pascal and if not probably sell it and grab a 970.. The division will be a good test for it I think. I actually erased most of my graphic intense games on accident during the cpu upgrade.. Bought the entire system and swapped parts over mistakingly formatting the wrong storage drive.

I just reinstalled Metal Gear V and got the exact same performance the 950 had from the releases benchmark. The 270x had 40fps with lowest from of 32 and now I got 52ps with low of 40 (+30%). I wasn't getting fully accurate results in the past before upgrading to the i-5. That's far better performance which is only 3fps behind the 960, but still a bit behind the 970 which is expected. Makes me feel better about waiting with what I have and then just buy something in the 3-400$ range. I might even consider AMD again if I get more results like this after a few more test.
