I built my first rig in 2014 for gaming with room for OCing as time goes on, to allow for a bit of future proofing. Due to some home remodelling, I've decided to leave that in main living room attached to big TV, and build a new mini ITX build in office/spare bedroom, principally to use as office/work PC with ability for light gaming independently (or steam in home stream from main rig for when main living room is being used), and also then easily portable if visiting parents etc for holidays.

Two main questions -
1) Is it worth investing in a high end new graphics card for main PC, and reusing existing card for new build, or will a mid-range/budget option be more than enough? I've had no issues so far with playing any games on high specs with main pc, so wouldn't be thinking of upgrading if not for new build.
2) Is my prospective new build overkill for the intended purpose? (basically, I don't know how much is required of the 2nd computer for steam in home streaming. And when I say 'work' use, it is basic internet and Word/powerpoint, not video/graphics editing).

1st build:
MB: MSI Z97 gaming 3
CPU: i5 4670K 3.4GHz
Cooler: Corsair H100i
RAM: HyperX Savage 2400 2x8GB, (plus 2x4GB of g.skill sniper something or other - total 24GB)
HDD: Samsung 840 EVO 1TB SSD
Graphics: Sapphire R9 270X 4GB
PSU: Corsair ax860

Theoretical new build:
MB: ASRock H97-ITX/ac
CPU: i3-4170 or i3-4370
Cooler: Raijintek Pallas 140mm
RAM: HyperX Savage 1600 2x4GB
HDD: Samsung EVO 500GB SSD
Graphics: Gigabyte R7 360 2GB, or XFX R9 390 8GB
Case: Silverstone Raven RVZ02B
PSU: Silverstone ST45SF-G 450W
OS: Win 8.1 (amazon selling for £30 cheaper than win 10, and currently can upgrade for free....right?)
(Note: I already have the SSD from an amazon lightening deal and a twitchy trigger finger so that's already purchased, also could take extra 2x4GB ram from 1st with probably little overall impact).

Other considerations - I'm not fussed about potential OCing for new build, but wifi-enabled MB is important. There isn't specifically a tight budget, but generally aiming £400-600. From looking around newegg & amazon, the lower end would be £432 (I'm in UK, obv), with the higher end setup plus graphics upgrade (with hand-me-down to new machine) giving a total cost of £621.

If there are other considerations that I've missed that would also impact the project, pleas chime in. thanks in advance for input!

Solution
I would just keep the existing desktop as is as long as it still does everything you want. You can build a Skylake quad core with your budget and the fact that you already have the SSD. I stuck a GTX 950 in, but you could use any number of cards depending on what level of gaming you would want to do.

Thanks for the input, I had a suspicion that the old rule of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" was relevant re gpu, though perhaps I should have been clearer in so far as I don't need a 2nd beast machine, so was thinking my proposed set up would overkill for the primary roles of 1) office computer & 2)steam streaming. The ability to game independently with this machine does not need to be vast, hence why I'd picked parts from the lower ends of Tom's hardware's best cpu/gpu lists. I was more hoping for input on where I could shave components/cost within that remit. I don't know much about amd processors, but understand that's a large are for cost saving relative to Intel, but will that compromise too much on the aforementioned needs? Thanks

be wary of the pallas on mitx boards in mitx cases too mate - its a big cooler & can overhang the board a fair way

youre going to have to do a bit of research into if it will actually fit.
There are other 120mm options like the deepcool gabriel & xigmatek janus that will definitely fit tht board/case combo & easily manage an i3.
