CPU/Fan shuts off; PSU or CPU/mobo issue?

Heyas, so months ago I replaced my old PSU w/ the eVGA 550w g2 gold. Solved old issues I had so I know PSU issues well, however I installed a Sata CD Rom a few days ago and got one BsOD. A few days later I put in a Samsung Evo 850 SSD. Got one lockup, but was fine for a day. Then went to open and load a game and my CPU's fan stopped and CPU. I check connections, unplugged SSD, CPU and fan working again. The next day, from sleepmode, turn on same issue, CPU fan not moving CPU fan not moving. SSD STILL UNPLUGGED. It will turn on after unplugging power/etc.

NOW - this is an old AM3+ board/AMD CPU which I am replacing soon anyways HOWEVER - I want to make sure this isn't my PSU - 550w should be more than adequate power. Be nice to rule out PSU with all new mobo/RAM/CPU coming soon. Thanks!

No; nothing other than adding the Sata Rom and then SSD (not the issue as w/o it still getting this). Possible overheating of CPU; I ran supernova's PSU monitor program and nothing out of ordinary, but true test is multimeter/PSU tester I lack; I know with my old PSU it did this stuff except never stopped CPU fan running. I have since had a reboot to black, just browsing firefox, cpu fan still running but had to turn off/on comp to load windows back. This is something that happened when I had to replace my old PSU and fixed it

I didn't mention this CPU is a AMD B555 unlocked 4 core. Pretty old; stock heatsink, no surprise if it is on the fritz. I just would hate as I upgrade soon the PSU would need RMAing. I guess right now if it does this with new parts I'll know.

So - I feel stupid as stupid does; cause I meh, so - MORAL HERE, maybe help others with MODULAR PSU on TOP OF CASE, take the whole unit out to make 100% all connections are properly seated and in. Only way to be 100%, because gravity and traction may be not such a pal.

the evga 550w g2 came with a 24 pin tester, I unplugged all connections, figured I'd just take mobo out as well in prep for upgrade, and tested PSU with this and LED case fan installed on molex. I noticed touching or moving the bulky 24 pin wire made LED fan and fan stop and short then come back on. Then it hit me. PSU on TOP often modular PSU cables can get traction downward overtime, sometimes unseating connections a little. It was an awk position to put in new cable for my SSD/CDROM when all started. I had to unplug my CPU connection on the power supply to get a Sata in. I checked cables before BUT - didn't take my PSU out fully, because I thought despite the awk position and hardly any room to fit fingers in the cables were as in as I could make them. So I did that and lo' CPU was way loose and Mobo connections and VGA wereslightly loose too and not fully in. DOH...

I tested the 24 pin tester moving cables and coils every which way not issue. So I reinstalled old mobo to test and so far, so good. Sooooo stupid, it's not possible to really feel/cable connections on top of case such a small area you have to take it out fully to test all.

MORAL: If your PSU is modular and on top of your case, check it every now and by taking the unit out fully, install cables PRIOR to putting in case (tho that is known I did that months ago). BUT now I know - and knowings half the battle!
