Solution
I own a GTX 970 and run this with an i5-6600k. I do not see that the 980 was ever an option for me. Why ? Simply because of the price difference between the 970 and the 980 being so great and the performance gains being low. If you are gaming at 1080p and not 1440p then the GTX 970 is all you need. I am gaming at 1080p and I am playing most new titles ( and older) on max settings at good frame rates.

IF you overclock your 970 ( providing you are willing to and have both the know how and the air flow in your case) the performance difference between these two cards becomes even smaller. IF on the other hand you want to get into 1440p gaming the 980 is probably a viable option as it should do noticeably better at higher screen...

249GBP vs 398 GBP - almost £150 difference.

If you were thinking about blowing almost 400GBP on a graphics card.....save an extra 100GBP and get this.....

This card is the single card equivalent to TWO GTX 970 cards!!

What do you want to use the PC for? The i5 is a bit slow tho, compared to other older generations of intel CPU's, I would not personally buy that i5 CPU, I would rather go for something like this:

http://ark.intel.com/products/80811/Intel-Core-i5-4690K-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz a bit more expensive compared to the i5-6400 but it's a better choice in my opinion

The i7 will be better if you planning on using the PC with multiple programs running, it's good for multitasks.

The i5-4690k is indeed a better CPU in terms of raw performance if your intent on building a system that's for gaming! BUT I presume you are drawn to the Skylake platform rather than the Haswell platform as you have shortlisted two Skylake CPUs.. ? If I had money to spend just now on a system I too would go down the Skylake route for obvious reasons :)
