I am looking to build a system around either a Z170X or a X99 and I want to know which is the best option.

This board
GIGABYTE GA-Z170X-GAMING G1 INTEL Z170, LGA1151, DDR4, USB3.1, ATX, SLI/CROSSFIRE MOTHERBOARD
With this CPU
Intel Skylake Core i7-6700K 4.00Ghz, 8MB, LGA1151, Unlocked Processor

Or
This board
GIGABYTE GA-X99-GAMING 5P INTEL X99 E-ATX LGA2011-3 MOTHERBOARD
With this CPU
Intel Haswell-E Core i7 5820K 6 Core 12 Threads 3.3Ghz 15M Cache LGA2011

I have already posted a question in the CPU area asking about Haswell-E vs Skylake, this question is about the motherboard. I do not care about any cost difference between the two choices.

Solution
Yes it is enough of a step-up. The 5820k can easily be overclock to 4GHz, and at that point the 5820k easily beats the 6700k. Even if you don't overclock it's still a very powerful CPU and would only be beaten in single-thread by the 6700k.

I do yes.
But I have been told the Skylake is the better CPU for gaming.
Is the X99 enough of a step up to get the Haswell-E over the Skylake?

I have just built this PC last week

Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor
Be quiet. Dark Rock Pro 3 Silent CPU Cooler for Extreme Overclocking
Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 3 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB WINDFORCE 3X Video Card
Corsair 1000W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
TP-Link TL-WDN4800 802.11a/b/g/n PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter
NZXT Source 530 ATX Full Tower Case

Really good build! So z170x and i7-6700k are great but also make sure to get a good graphic card as well
